Atheist unite!!

I'm an Athiest who was raised Catholic. I came to the realization that the bible is just a story and gods are just fiction. There is so much in the bible that is unbelievable. It's hard for me to figure out why so many people believe it. Here are a few things that are unbelievable -- 2 of every animal on a wooden boat. Someone walking on water. Turning water into wine magically (without grapes or fermentation). Someone parting an entire sea. If I can't see it or witness it then I can't believe in it. Being Atheist also frees up my Sundays to do what I want :)

There is room for an Atheist thread I think. Just probably in social like the others? After all there is the Christian one and the "other" wiccan/pagan one.
The other thread is an Earth Based spirituality thread which may includes, but is not limited to Wicca or paganism. Wicca is a specific religion of it's own. Wicca and paganism might be considered earth based spirituality but Earth based spirituality does not fall under the category of wicca or paganism.

I don't know what I think anymore. I used to be quite a devout Christian. I have a lot of internal turmoil surrounding the whole church thing. I used to believe...but then at the same time I believed in fairies at the bottom of the garden and Father Christmas once too.
I think my old Sunday School mentality is at the root of a lot of the shame and hate I feel towards myself. I no longer accept the Bible as truth. Encountered too many "Sunday Christians " who have that public show on a Sunday but not as they are behind closed doors or away from the congregation.
The church wouldn't accept me back anyway, I'd probably burst into flames and gargoyles will scream if I crossed the threshold now :cautious:

How do you live now without gods to protect, guide and help you?

As a lifelong atheist I've been asked similar questions many times. It always baffles me somewhat because the answer seems so obvious. Who do you turn to if there is no patriarchal sky god? Each other or course.

We have the responsibility of looking after one another. We have the responsibility of standing up for what is right. Being an atheist means we can't abrogate our responsibilities to each other with a simple shrug and "Oh well, its God's will".

I think Christianity is the worst of all religions. All religions are a plague upon the earth. An unproven, monetised belief system, spat out for many reasons. To keep order, to keep riches, to keep controlling people. In all scripture there is truth and lies. Scripture from the centuries is perspective from then, interpretation from then. There are lies that enter from interpretation -- people in the position of power do not want bad things to be told, so they leave them out. Bias - control - order.

Lets be honest. All religions are a plague upon this earth. More people have died on the planet from religious zealots than most causes of death. Christianity alone used to kill anyone who did not believe as they did, documented back to the 4th century. Likely since man ever existed (more beliefs here -- God or evolution).

Religions are the biggest hypocrites about killing and murder. They preach as bad, yet they do it themselves and self-justify it as being OK, for the cause, for the faith, for their God.

My thoughts are not about whether there was a Jesus, or whether there is some mystic single power figure somewhere in the universe who is called by many different names, depending on the rhetoric you choose to believe. There is a lot we don't know, and if you honestly think that we're the only planet with intelligent life within the entire of all galaxies, then you're being naive and simple. We believe we're advanced -- but that is relative to our knowledge and only factual to our current knowledge.

Once again, scientologists take this to the extreme -- monetised it, control it, and they're another powerful organisation spewing rhetoric and dissent across the globe. Believe our way or die, is nearly their credence.

There is a lot documented on different things, we interpret uniquely. What we know now vs what people knew then, very different recordings would ensue as to the interpretive aspect in the future. We make horror movies of what we call aliens. But if there is other, more intelligent life in the universe, are we not aliens ourselves to them?

A period in time some were called a witch, brewing their herbs and potions from natures elements. We call them naturopaths and herbalists now. Same thing -- same outcome. Some herbs and potions work to help with common ailments, others are just hit and miss, some just nonsense.

An atheist is a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.

I don't believe or disbelieve that there is any one great being with universal power that takes and gives life, but certainly I don't believe the rhetoric nonsense the bible spews out. Funnily enough, the most sold book in the world with over 100 million copies per annum, exceeding 5 billion known sales to date. Where does that money go? To religions that ensure they push their rhetoric by buying the most expensive, prominent real estate holdings, for maximum audience captivity.

Religion has been forced so much over the centuries, we're smarter now than ever, and most religions are losing numbers by the day as a result. People are educated and choosing for themselves more than ever, instead of familiar force being applied and accepted through generations. Religion is losing a lot of ground now, and for good reason -- people are more educated than ever.

Science is giving us fact. Science has allowed us to watch other planets form in space, to form understanding: HubbleSite - Discovering Planets Beyond - How Do Planets Form?

Science can prove that a God did not create the planet. Planets evolve -- science has factual evidence to support planet formation now, and we're still learning.

Personally, I don't care what anyone believes or does not believe. Big believer on respecting individual choices -- as long as a person doesn't try and shove their beliefs down my throat, just the same I don't tell them they're wasting their time with their religious beliefs. Each to their own. If it makes them happy -- Yay! If not -- do something different then.

Religion is a big problem though. Always has been. Probably always will be. Especially as religion continues to lose power over people of the world, those in power will become more desperate -- reverting to belief systems that they need to create mass carnage and chaos as an attempt to bring their followers again. Power -- order -- control.

I believe religious leaders in the world are no better than the executives screwing people for millions and billions of dollars per annum, without concern for the damage they do along the way. They want to control -- they want to keep order -- which keeps the money flowing to them for more power.

Religion is horrific. It is a plague.

Not something you've thought much about then @anthony ;),
Well said btw.

Couldn't have put this better myself!!!
Hang on, I didn't even think to write it, so maybe that should have just said, "couldn't have put this!"
I love a post with interesting links.

I was raised Christian protestant but I already began to ask questions as a child "Why" and "Who" and "When" and those questions were not very welcome.

It was kind of a must on a small village that you had to do your confirmation - with lessons one year before and going to church every Sunday. My grandmother is very strict about religion and my uncle is even worse but in a strange way.

I left church when I was 19 because a) I didn't believe in that institution, b) I didn't want to pay the taxes and c) I don't see a reason why I have to pay money to be "allowed" to believe and d) how could God let the world be like this?! My parents accepted it, my aunt freaked out because her son is my god-child. My grandmother didn't know about it until she asked me whom I had elected on some Church representative election and I told her. She got angry, freaked out, blamed me ..."And who will protect you when you have a car accident?! Your teddy bear?!" she cried to me. ...as if any God would care about the fact whether I'm an active part in that thing called "Church" or not.

I also often had very bad discussions in Religion classes in school. Okay, I wanted to provoke but it was shocking how people reacted and how intolerant they were. Once, we had gotten a huge piece of paper and were supposed to write down everything we connect with Christmas. A girl wrote "Birth of Jesus", I wrote "Didn't exist"...she wrote "He existed"....I asked for the birth certificate because there had that counting back then - and that was the point where things escalated. She screamed at me that I shouldn't be allowed to give presents or to receive any...and so on...I left the Religion class after that.

I accept people who find peace in that community but I cannot accept such intolerance under the cover of faith.
