Atheist unite!!

@somerandomguy , not suprises me, not even makes me mad. My cup is full of this.
Few months ago, a teacher (I am trying to follow a course on sales ?) mentioned that life it is much more easier for atheist. His simplistic explanation was that we don't worry about anything. Believers need to worry about what God will think and, I guess, the virgin Marys of their choice thinks, too.
So... It knocked home ?. For 10 minutes Ihe had to listen to an atheist explain to him why my life it is not as easy as his neither the rest of the class. If I have a problem, big or small, I have to find a solution. If I haven't any, I have to stay with it. No God, saints or virgins are going to help me if I pray strong enough.
I enjoyed giving my thoughts alive and also watching their faces.
It was an a yeahhh moment ??

Just been listening to The Atheist Experience's most recent podcast episode and they mentioned an excellent resource that I'd never heard about before: Recovering from Religion

They have resources to help folks who are doubting or planning to leave their faith, including a 24 hour phoneline and a 24 hour online volunteer-run chat if you are questioning and need to talk :)

They also have an online community where you can connect with others who are going through the same, and are aiming to have an IRL support group in every state (of America) by this time next year (with a number already in place)

(I haven't yet looked into analogous resources for other countries, but I suspect the online resources from Recovering from Religion could still be helpful for those living outside the US) :)

There is so much good in a life lived without religion.

f*ck. Some days I really struggle with the absence of any self-assured meeting with passed loved ones in an after life.

Missing my sweet friend, G, so much today.
Sometimes I wish I believed in some kind of applicable deity so I'd at least die thinking that I'd get to see G's face again.

Of course, that thought never goes beyond a wish, as my atheism is one of the few constant certainties in my life.

But some days it is really really difficult to know I'll never see her, or others, again as I loved them.

Such a brilliant video that highlights the contradictions littered throughout the bible (as well as skydaddy's obsession with dead people).
In fact, I wonder if anyone has ever taken out every contradiction to see how thick the book would be then... not very, I'd wager.

Wishing you all a fulfilling godless weekend

Hmm. Pondering and accepting opinions from my fellow atheists.

I'm working (verrrry sloooowly) on a guidebook for male survivors and I'm trying to outline the chapter about support. There's no doubt that communities of faith can sometimes provide a certain level of support for survivors.

Yet religion can be extremely damaging at the same time, especially when it comes to questions about same-sex attraction, which is something that many male survivors struggle with. I've communicated with people, for example, who were molested but are unwilling to disclose simply because their churches are virulently anti-gay. I have also debated others who are quite happy to condemn homosexuals ostensibly because God says they're an abomination, and of course that just happens to mesh with their worldview that homosexuality equals abuse. Not much actual healing going on there.

I had been thinking about just skipping the whole religion thing, but I don't think that would be fair (probably three-quarters or more of the participants on a different sexual abuse-themed message board I go to are devout Christians). It might be better to take a few paragraphs and discuss the pros and cons of religious support.

@somerandomguy it doesn't really matter what they believe in, as long as it helps them, and even if it doesn't it's out of the scope of your job. What you may help with is to provide support. The issue with religion is that the religion itself may not condemn anything, a belief in a deity does not come from religion but spiritual experience. Hence why people join, change and leave religions. It could be helpful to have support for them that represents spiritual life more than what other people in their religions actually believe in. And if you can't provide that support and understanding, its best if you don't touch th e subject at all. It's an extremely difficult and complex situation, particularly with monotheistic religions.
I've had people, man and women alike, being ridicularized for being religious. It has become fashionable for both factions to render the other invalid. You may, out of respect and for more understanding, ask in the religious thread what's their opinion.

I was watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade this morning with my wife and our toddler, when our toddler pointed at Santa and wanted to know who it was.

"That's Santa Claus," said my wife.

"There are two fictional characters associated with Christmas, [Toddler]," I said. "Santa Claus and Jesus."
