For most of my adult life, genuine compliments would trigger suicidal thoughts. It was a complex part of my pathology and the extent of my self-loathing.
But I’d add to that: people that really mattered to me? Could see that (because it was often trez obvious), and would persist anyway, gently and genuinely. And I’m eternally grateful to them for that.
