Book Club Chit Chat Thread

I buy most of my books second hand too KP.

Not long ago I bought 2 books, that should have been around £18 for the both of them. I paid less than the cost of one of them for both, with free postage.

I entered a different discussion rate into the Alchemist post, if others could take a look and see what they think. The idea is that I wanted to play around with different methods over the initial books to see what works best. I am finding that this current method is a bit slow, where even if we are only having one book per month, then we read it faster as you often need to read a certain amount of a book to have an idea of things to discuss them vs. chapter by chapter.

Need feedback, need ideas on how to play with this over the initial books, etc... try to find the right combination of being able to get stuck into a good book, yet open a nice dialogue for discussion that follows over the month before the next book begins.

I will try and get the books when in Birmingham. Will check on line for second hand book stores or specials.

Oh dear, Maos Last Dancer came this morning and H brought the post in - oops. It is in really good condition and it is screaming 'read me' at me.

Self control KP, self control.

I will look for the books on the list when I am in Birmingham. Before I get there I will check out the internet for possible shops to go to. It's cheaper than ordering them in from England. Most of the time the postage is more than the book. And a lot of them can't be obtained here.

I was thinking about our book list last night, and how to mix things up even further than how it is done now. So what I would like to suggest, is that those who specifically participate in the next book, we each get to pick one book out of the existing recommendations, or submit out own, either fiction or non-fiction novel type, so we all get to add something to the chosen reading list that we really want to read... and we get to read along again in realms we otherwise do not venture through others choices still.

Something just to spice up the current list a little... which is pretty awesome, but there were lots of people with grand expectations to participate, then like I expected, only a committed handful participate within the club itself. So for those as a reward for participation, we all choose one book.

We will know who is participating in the next book based on who has adequate knowledge of the story in the discussion, whether read prior or reading as part of the club.

Why? Because there are few voting on the books anyway, so we may as well look at other options to expand our reading, yet also read something we like at the same time.

Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs. Was made into a movie and it's a great book.

It may be a bit instense for some. Anthony perhaps can read the books preview and decide.

I'm finally getting into The Tigers Wife, yes it does get better, thankfully. I've really found it hard getting back into reading.

I was crying today when I read a description about children, it triggered how powerless I felt as a child, and how innocent a child is, why do some people treat them so badly?

It's been a long while that a book made me feel that way, so it's certainly worth reading. I not sure where I'm up to though because I'm reading it on kindle.

What do others think if we cut the alchemist short, ending it at the end of March, so we start a new book at the beginning of each month on the 1st, one book per month? The alchemist is a short book...

Thoughts?
