Book Club Chit Chat Thread

@anthony You said that you read a lot of books on your Kindle app but it hurts your eyes. I'm reading from my Kindle app for ipod and switched the background to black and the words to white or sepia. That's really helped cut down the strain on my eyes. Just a thought.

You can read a book whenever you want. To get book club going, we need to allow additional time for everyone to get their options in order, hence why we chose two books straight up, and already the next book thread is in progress... so we have a constant forward list of defined books for reading.

The discussion is the important aspect, as that is where we need to set boundaries I think, as you don't want people spoiling it for others by posting information ahead of time in discussion.

Someone who has The Tigers Wife already, I'm sure could say how many chapters there are, and provide a rough suggested reading rate that we should follow, before the rest of us get the book.

The whole idea is that this doesn't become stressful to anyone, nor is anyone advantaged or disadvantaged, hence... read the book if you have it already, but don't disadvantage someone who doesn't by posting anything about it, or ahead of the agreed discussion rate that allows acceptable time for everyone to read x chapters, discuss... read x chapters, discuss, etc.

Quite honestly, it would be very disappointing IMHO if someone started posting ahead of the reading rate, or eluding to things ahead, spoiling the read for others... hence, we need to define the discussion rate.

To my knowledge, a book club who meet in person have a set timing they meet, weekly or monthly, etc. They pick their book, every reads it in their own time. What doesn't happen, is people start having earlier discussions on the content read, instead that is left to when they collectively meet and share their interpretations, experiences, etc, of the book.

To me, that is the idea that should be followed here... so people can read whatever they want, when they want, but we discuss the book in some type of defined process so that nobody is spoiling something for another.

I have no doubt there are people here who can read 400 pages in a day. Me... I can't, nor do I have the time to dedicate a day for it, and I can't speed read. My inability is not disadvantaging the speed reader to read the book now. Nor is their speed reading disadvantaging me reading slowly, because neither of us can respond about x chapters until y period.

I think that was the initial interpretation taken from our first ever discussion in the chit chat thread on whether to have a book club or not.

Tell me if I left anything out from the initial thread on this: [DLMURL]https://www.ptsdforum.org/c/threads/about-book-club-read-me-to-partake.22936/[/DLMURL] or whether it can be done better.

Anthony, Did you want the contents list of this book? For example Chapter one: and it's title.

....and on down through its 13 Chapters.

Simply interested in how many chapters,? Or an outline with their names as well?.

As for any suggested reading rates idk. I'm a slow reader, in fact I read whole sections over to make sure I follow and remember what I am reading.

I think we really only need to know, how many chapters are there, pages per chapter and define a reasonable rate from that.

Some books have like 10 pages per chapter, others 20+.

Me personally, I think 25 - 50 pages per day is ok. Now adding to that, remove stress from the equation, plus add discussion time for that amount of reading, one could say, 25 pages approximately per 48hrs.

That is the equivalent of saying, a 350 page book would be read and discussed over a month, or book club meets every month.

Would that approach be stressful for anyone? Is that too long to read 350 pages + discussion?

I think the discussion is what will be unpredictable... as when you add that reading and responding time into this, suddenly things may become a little more apparent for time.

Right now... we are waiting around to get it started... so people with the book have an advantage head start, yet eventually we will all catchup to a similar level.

Oh' pages per chapter, I don't know how to find that out with some of my electronic books, such as this one. It just kind of left out the page numbers. Sorry.

The Tiger's Wife, 13 Chapters.

Maybe we need to look at the first book as a learning experience. I think chapter by chapter is a good way. BUT, as Anthony says, chapters vary in length.

I propose, someone with a book (proper book, not electronic:p) list number of chapters and pages per chapter. We agree on a timescale for chapter one and then discuss it. We then do the same with each following chapter. Once page numbers per chapter are known, timescales for the book could then be given.

If this works, it could be rolled out to following books.

For those of you in Australia - just wanted to make you aware of a site called Booko.com.au It compares all of the costs through various sites and gives you a list from cheapest to most expensive.

I purchase many books on the internet and the cheapest that I find is Bookdepository.co.uk - it has free delivery and often has sales. The only frustrating thing I find is that if you order 10 books - you will more than likely receive close to 10 packages rather than one with 10 books.

Anyway, enjoy your reading and discussing.
