Sufferer Canadian Police Officer With Ptsd - Some Questions...

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hello Can Cop,
I am a full time Association guy with 27 years on the job. One of my portfolios is WSIB cases. I have been on our Critical Incident Stress Team for 14 years. I am currently working on a number of PTSD files for our members. I may be able to assist you with your ongoing journey back to work.

Our son has PTSD and is a Policeman. He needs help. He is afraid he will lose his job. He has also been a policeman for about 13 years with 8 on a SWAT team. How do we know whether or not a Psychologist is any good? What is the best thing we can do? Are there other Police members he can talk to who have "recovered" and are still police members? Help, we are in a crisis right now!!!!

Hi Auxiliary:

Sorry to here about your son: not sure why he thinks he will loss his job. I have talked with Dr Rose who is avalable to all CPS officers that have problems.

Here is the just of it from my point of view.

PTSD is caused by an event that impacts the brain and memorry so hard you have no idea what the hell hit you.

You could have seen the plane crash or in it. You could have been the one who saw the shooting or the one that shoot the gun, or even had a gun fired at you.

I'm in Calgary in recovery and have learned tons abot this thing we call PTSD.

If you wish i can talk with him and see what happens

John

Hey there folks... Do NOT let WSIB fool you into going to CAMH in Toronto. Its a BIG waste of time! Dr. Bender is the most biased piece of shit I have ever met. Keep the fight alive against these CROOKS at WSIB!!!

I can only relate my own experience. The Sgt thought I had PTSD symptoms following a bizarre lethal force incident. It went up the chain, I was sent to the EAP shrink who spent the next two years billing the city for I'm not sure what for exactly and which really messed with my confidence in my own decisions. Finally I told the chief I was planning to take some time to deal with issues and never worked again. He called me at home and told me not to come back. It seems he talked to a buddy on the FBI who told him he might have liability issues if he let me report for duty again. But the Chief was quite longwinded on the great ways he'd take care of me. The city was huge on promises but smoke and wind on action. The city filed on my behalf with the state and THEN told me they had done so and if I wanted the representation I could go along or take a hike. I went along. At the first meeting with the state, no one from the Chiefs office showed up. Not the promised lawyer, not the chief, not the city atty. The state employees laughed at me and told me I had been had and needed a lawyer. That was as big a mistake as any. A lawyer needs to bill and that means allowing the shrink all the time he thought he needed to either evaluate me or pay off his Mercedes. Either way, I wound up talking to the most incompetent man I have ever known every Wednesday for months. He'd just stare at me until I'd talk and if I didn't, I'd get a letter from the city saying I'd be round filed with nothing if I didn't play the game. My lawyer took about half of the less than fifteen grand the state paid me. I haven't worked steady since. I've had employers refuse to allow me to take a day off for months in a row even after I told HR that I needed to see my dr. about problems with my meds. 'Couldn't spare me, not even for an afternoon. Been awful busy etc' for months. The afternoon I went to see my Dr without permission was the end of that job too. Don't just count on the laws protection, be sure of what is and isn't law where you need the law to apply.

Since anything pretending to be treatment ended with the check, it was many years before medications entered the picture and I lost many jobs each a bit worse than the previous one, until I finally saw a competent Dr. and he found a combination of meds that work. It's about too late for me though, I'm almost unemployable now. After two years being unemployed the last two HR people I did get an interview with were kind enough to tell me so. They said they'd "like" to hire me, but they could never sell my work history "upstairs". Whatever that means. My last boss was a disabled Viet Nam vet who was quite familiar. He was great to work for and to know in general, but the shop folded, and he passed soon after. It's been more than two years. This is the US, so it may be different there, but for me it was like walking into a minefield. Get somebody who has actually been there for advice and trust no one in charge or who stands to get paid from this. My advice based on my experience, I hope your experience is different. Be careful.

Hello,

I have just accepted to go to the CAMH (worried) what can I expect? I was diagnosed 3years ago with PTSD from a work place accident. I have 4 doctors backing me up, saying I'am not ready to return to work and will never be able to return to the employer apparently this is not enough!. I have been in a continuing battle with WSIB and the employer. If this CAMH says I can return......can i fight this? According to WSIB my doctors have not given enough clear instructions.

Don't even get me going about WSIB. I don't have one nice word to say about them. Not concerning PTSD though.

Dont go refuse or your doomed

Greetings. I read your post and need help.

I have just finished my complaint at the College of Physcians and Surgeons and they backed this horrible doctor and human being. He lied, twisted everything I said and went completely against 9 other doctors opinions and forced me back to work even though many other professionals said I could die if I go back to work.

He conspired with WSIB to control funding and this cannot be allowed. I am certain that everyone of his patients at WSIB has had the same experience for I strongly believe he is in bed with them.

Could you help me . I am now going to the Review Board to fight this decision, his guilt was ignored because the government does not want third party assessments interferred with or the big insurance giants and governments would not be able to hurt anyone.

Please contact me if you can help or know others who have been hurt by this man..
with respect

Ruby

The WSIB has you right where they want you. And if you refuse anything they can cut you loose with their payments. So I agree with you Ruby.
