There is a set of chat rules and a standard chat timing weekly which can be viewed here in the Forum FAQ:

As Kathy stated, plus.... the new system doesn't hide you after a short period of time like the old one used too. In the initial chat system, if you went in and stayed in their it locked you, so others couldn't see you, you couldn't see others come in, etc etc. You basically had to come in within a five minute window of one another, something like that.

What you have now though, being the latest version, you can sit in their forever and it won't lock up on you.... basically, if you sit in their so the chat is open in a different tab / window in your browser, you can surf the forum and people will see you when they come in. All you have to do is check back often to see if someone is in the forum, or simply turn your sound on and when a new person makes a post, ie. Hi... how are you and hit enter, you will hear the post sound in the chat, so that will tell you someone has joined you if your not checking it often.

If you want to chat with people, just stay in the room, turn your sound on and up loud, and if anyone posts you will hear it where ever you may be in your house. Just recognise the sound when a post is made when in chat. It is a superior and more robust system now.
