Chronic Insomnia And Nightmares Everynigh

I have been diagnosed recently with chronic insomnia. I am taking melatonyn for a while, and see if does work. My main problem is, when I fall sleep, I keep dreaming with the people that hurt me, also they try to bring me back into the cult. The conversations and feelings, even smells are so vivid in my dream that they seem more real than reality. I awake totally confused and angry almost everyday. With a heavy headache. So, I am afraid to get some sleep.
Any thoughts that could be helpful?
Thanks in advance

@MariaY: I have the exact same problem! I tried to keep a dream journal or try that 'change the ending in your mind' thing, but neither really worked. I'm currently on a med that seems to really be helping reduce the frequency/intensity of my issues- but I'm not sure if we can recommend medication names on here (as I'm new to the forums).

Thank you very much for your reply! I am very sorry you are suffering of this too. Yep, the dream journaling hasn't worked for me, neither. It is ok about meds, I am not tempted on self medication. I have reasonably good doctors here, and always can blame them if some meds don't work ;). One good thing about the nightmares, I remember once I faced my abuser and went totally mad on her. I said things I woudn't be able in person within the dream. So, It was cathartic, some how. But generally, nights are bad and the mood, too.
Hope it will slowly change and I became the winner :) Wish the same for you, too.

@MariaY: That's good to hear! I'm glad that you were able to face them in one of your dreams- I can totally understand how that would be a refreshing change from the otherwise fitful nights. Doxepin is what is helping me sleep through the nights without as many frequencies, though I took too low of a dose at first and it didn't help until I hade the amount adjusted. Before bed I sometimes also use Vistaril, which quiets down a stressed/busy mind into a more restful state.

I can relate, for awhile now every other night I have a terrible dream. The other night was so creepy, I dreamt I had shared with my mom some issues I was dealing with in my life. Which in reality I do frequently and my mom always have good feedback. In the dream after sharing with her she went in her room, I checked on her and discovered she was laying on bed. Came close looking at her and noticed she was not breathing and her stomach was suddenly swollen. It was an horrific scene, I began to cry loudly and then I woke up. I was so relieved it was only a dream.

Oh, no!! What a nightmare, Issy!
I wish they wouldn't make any imprint on me during the day, but they do, on thoughts, decition making, attitude...lots of areas.

@MariaY that must be overwhelming having to deal with leftovers from your dream throughout the day. Gosh I wish you did'nt have to go through that. I wish we could all have more pleasant fairytale like harmonious joyous dreams, despite of what we deal with when we are awake.
