Chronic suicidal thoughts

As the title suggests I guess I’ve been having suicidal thoughts now for many many years. The thoughts are intrusive and pop into my headspace whenever they want and I’ve recently been giving them more thought lately. I have lots of pain at the moment and my physical health is poor and I think this a factor in allowing myself to even give my brain time to ruminate on ways to end my life. I don’t want to die and would seek help in real life if I ever thought I was even close to acting on then. Do some people always have to cope with these thoughts and does anyone have any coping strategies of how to them lessening in some way? The intensity of my problem with this goes up and down, but at least weekly the ideas pop into my head. Does anyone else experience this problem?

I think a lot of us on here deal with almost constant ideation. I don’t have any good advice on how to cope with it though. Are you in therapy? Also, there is always the option of going inpatient for a little while to give yourself a break from reality, especially since you’re giving more weight to the thoughts.

No not currently in therapy but awaiting a psychiatrist appointment soon. I feel safe at home, have good friends and family so am very lucky. Live in UK so inpatient isn’t really an option unless I was at immediate risk myself and I’m not. Thanks for your response, know not alone on this one makes you feel less ‘mad’

Glad that you feel safe at home and have a good support system. I am glad that you have scheduled an appt with a psychiatrist. Please don't be afraid to reach out to the psychiatrist office for a sooner appt. or to have someone go with you to the dr if needed.

I'm in the UK too, and yeah, I have ideation pretty much on and off for years. Hopefully your psychiatrist appointment comes through soon though.

Do you have a plan of what youll do to keep yourself safe if you think you might act? Sometimes it's helpful so that if you are going to act you have a preplanned thing of "nope, gotta do that stuff first", or if you're worried you'll act but don't want to it can be a kind of distraction until it passes plus a reminder you've lasted through it before.

Hope things ease up soon :)
