Here is the chance to follow along the election process until November hopefully at least.
I guess we should stay on topic and only discuss the two major players.

I think that we need to be polite and just agree to disagree if it gets too heated. Have a reference and I am guilty of not doing that so I will be better here.

Opinions are very welcome and I am interested in this topic as many have proved to have an interest as well.

As we are a global community, everyone on the forum is welcome to speak.

I am very interested in this upcoming election as many here are so here we go.

Anyone watching or listening to the DNC (democratic national convention)? Video of it can be watched for free on the DNC website and anyone can listen to it for free on C-Span through the radio link on their page. I prefer to watch/listen on those websites because they don't include all the hyped yammering away by various talking heads.

Both parties seem much more intensely divided than all the national conventions from 2000 to 20012.

So far, the RNC speeches only increased my desire to not vote for Trump (and my respect for Cruz.) Trump did get a 6 point bump in the polls after the convention. (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/poll-donald-trump-climbs-percentage-points-week-gop/story?id=40848357)

The DNC opening was interesting, and I'm grateful for their efforts to rework the superdelegate system. Almost every speech so far has a lot more booing than even Cruz was booed by the Trump crowd.

Are the conventions influencing how anyone else will vote? They are basically like 4 day infomercials for each party, especially when the nominee is basically decided before hand. It didn't used to be this way. It used to be a time where much debate and huge party decisions were made.

Julian Assange, on Trump vs. Clinton: 'Do I prefer cholera or gonorrhea?'
In an interview with Democracy Now, Wikileaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange compared choosing between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to choosing between two different infectious diseases and said that “personally, I would prefer neither.”

“Well, you’re asking me, do I prefer cholera or gonorrhea,” Assange said, in response to a question on his stance regarding Trump. “We know how politics works in the United States. Whoever - whatever political party gets into government is going to merge with the bureaucracy pretty damn fast. It will be in a position where it has some levers in its hand. And so, as a result, corporate lobbyists will move in to help control those levers. So it doesn’t make much difference in the end.”

What does make a difference, Assange said, “is political accountability, a general deterrence set to stop political organizations behaving in a corrupt manner. That can make a difference, because that changes the perception of what you can do or not do.”

I'm in Argentina. In my country the general opinion is that if Trump wins, the relationship between the US and the rest of the world will suffer. That would make the people from the US suffer as well.

Personally, I'm following this election process closely because both my mother and my sister along with her children are US citizens and live over there.

It looks like Clinton and the DNC are really struggling to get the party united behind her at the convention. One example of the booing that is making headlines at all the media outlets:

But I also don't think Trump and the RNC can really make any claim they did any better. The discontented democrats are simply being louder and more persistent than when the discontented republicans were when they booed Cruz off stage. That was one time the delegates booed a speaker. The DNC speakers are getting booed almost every other speech.

I expected there to be more vocal groups at the DNC, especially outside the convention.

Conventions usually only give temp boots to candidates, and the boost usually fades by the end of the summer. I don't think this division in either party will make much difference... but I do think it is a symptom of a greater problem: the highest unfavorablity ratings ever for the two nominees. (Stunning graph at this site: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features...or-both-trump-and-clinton-is-record-breaking/)

I guess it's actually not so surprising that both parties are struggling to unite behind their already fairly unliked candidates.

I have never seen such booing at a political convention before that I can recall. This is a new phenominon and the party is having divisions within their ranks. Too soon to tell. It is only the first day.
