Cognitive Deficit From Aripiprazole (abilify)

Ever since I have been taking this vile drug I can not focus, remember, concentrate, read, think or pay attention. I was wondering if any one else experiences a cognitive deficit from Abilify? I hate this drug it causes sexual side effects, not from hyperprolactinemia but (I suspect) from dopaminergic blockade it is also making me gain weight.

I take a small dose of Abilify and have gained weight but I have not experienced any of the other side effects that you have described. I just wanted to say that I am sorry you are having a hard time with it and hope things improve for you.

I, too, feel cognitively impaired and over sedated when taking Abilify or any of the medications that fall into that category of atypical antipsychotics. For me, the side effects are not worth the potential benefit and I generally refuse to take them (I do take other medications, just nothing from that group).

I stopped taking it after it killed my sex drive, which was within a few days, so I never gave it a chance to make my head foggy. Have you tried other antipsychotics? I've had luck with micro doses of Geodon, but still have bad side effects so only take it in emergency situations. (Some doctors will prescribe it PRN)

Do you mind if I ask, tremors? I remember when I tried Geodon well over a decade ago I thought it was a miracle drug. It made such a drastic difference for me. So wonderful that when I started to get a slight tremor I actually thought it was worth it.

Then that tremor got worse, and worse and worse until I looked like I had Parkinsons and I wasn't even capable of signing my own name. I don't mean my signature was illegible, I mean that I couldn't even hold a pen in a way that would allow it to transfer ink onto a piece of paper and allow me to even attempt to scribble my name. I was embarrassed to be around people, for them to see the constant shaking.

Geodon didn't feel like such a miracle anymore. When people ask me about Geodon I say it is evil...to tease me with such drastic results only to completely negate them with such a drastic side effect. It's a shame, really.

Abilify is awful! I gained 30 pounds on it in less than three months despite being a long distance runner. I stopped sleeping completly despite taking higher doses of medication that had helped me sleep with no issues for years. I ground my teeth till my gums bled and had heart palpitations and constantly sweat from over heating. I would vomit from the hot flashes and still gain weight non stop, even if I dieted and ran 40 miles a week.

I say stand up for yourself, call your doctor over and over until they get you in and on something else. My doctor would not listen to me, and he misidentified shingles for a lamictol rash and put me on the abilify with out taking me off. Now, after over a year I have permanent nerve damage and pain where the shingles were.

I started having seizures and totalled my car because no one believed me I had seizures, no one made the connection between the abilify and everything that was happening, they told me it was stress. Keep trying, medication changes are awful but don't stop standing up for your self.

I read an article about how they have identified 5 types of chemical imbalances in the brain in adults with major depressive disorder. Not all are seritonin issues, some have to do with copper imbalances in people who can't digest meat for example.
Best of Luck!
