I’ve been working with various different sorts of service animals for a number of years now, as a trainer for both the dogs, and the people who rely on them to live a meaningful and independent life.
My job is a whole lot easier because I’m able to accept (not “like”, not “agree with”, not “submit myself to”…just accept) that there are many people in the world who don’t understand.
That very often comes from a lack of knowledge and experience. But sometimes, it’s just their belief system. And many people hold onto it with the same amount of passion as any other values based belief.
Some people are open to being better educated. But many aren’t. These days, I work with the people that are interested, and let the rest of the world go about its business, the same way I do on polling day, and Idul Fitri, and any other values-based system that I anticipate different value-driven beliefs to crop up in.
I’m glad you’ve got a dog in your life, and even better that you’ve got a partnership working where they can help you with your health. If you can, try and accept that some people don’t get it, and don’t want to get it. And that’s okay.
