I have complex trauma in my past and I'm doing a form of somatically based exposure therapy and it is hard but incredibly awesome. It completely gets rid of triggers. For example, windowless rooms used to be a trigger. I was in them all the time anyhow in life and the trigger never lessened. Then I did the somatically based exposure therapy process my therapist does, and I no longer feel anxious in windowless rooms. Exposure therapy is hard, but with the way my therapist does it, in 1-2 sessions, a trigger goes away completely. I feel so much lighter and better afterwards. Then we move on to the next trigger.
A safe place helps for when there is a cluster of traumas and triggers linked together. It's not used during the exposure therapy process. But it is helpful for in between sessions and after sessions where we were not able to complete the process.
