There are different kinds of 'brain stimulation', although I believe you might be right, in that the significant difference is between anything electrical vs. anything magnetic. Magnetic stimulation is generally non-invasive, not dangerous, no memory side effects. TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is the biggie.They called it something else like cranialelectro stimulation but I don't see any difference.
ECT (electro-convulsive therapy, aka 'shock therapy') is the heavy stuff. It can be a life-saver for people, but IMO it's not worth the risks of memory loss unless the person is literally not functioning and has no other options.

@cactus_jack - I'm really sorry you felt so bad, and weren't able to get help. That's all too common in many areas, and it's just not right.
Forgive me, because I'm sure I should know this - but is therapy not an option for you? Does NAMI operate a chapter in your area? You have a lot of life stressors, and they aren't your fault - but having help to process them could make a difference. Even on-line therapy might be something to consider.
