Dealing With Noise

Hmm. Maybe you could substitute noise cancellation at home for white noise? Same principle, maybe of saving patience for when you need it.

I'm really lucky to live alone. I have complete control over my environment.

Is it just white noise that you don't like? I mean are you ok with brown noise and the other "color" noises, or do you say "white noise" as a catch all term? I use "white noise" to mean any of those types of sounds as people know what white noise is pretty much, so I just ask for clarification. I can't even tell you the exact type of noise that I use in my home.

Are you familiar with apps that provide background noise? I had quite a few at one time. They have all kinds of noises. Nature sounds, etc. I prefer non-looping "white noise" so I don't like nature sounds so much.

Just trying to throw ideas out there. :)

@joeylittle, THANK YOU! I bookmarked the site and the reply on here. Im super sensitive to any sound or touch right now and the tv being an easy "go to" is bothering me right now. But silence is deafening to me and magnifies all of my horrible thoughts which is why the tv is always on but that isnt working right now and neither is white noise so i was at a loss. That is awesome! Ive never heard of colored noise or anything beyond white noise.

@JEKBreatheandBelieve
I've tried them out for a couple of days now and found that for some noises, particularly mid and high range, it blocks them well. It does block alot of the sound of doors slamming, etc but not well enough as I can still hear it to the point it affects me a bit but I think that's more to do with vibrations. They're also big and uncomfortable so can't be worn for too long but I only got them to use indoors so that doesn't matter too much. It's definitely helped and taken the edge off. It's pretty easy to hold a conversation too.

I tested out some high end active noise cancelling headphones in a shop and they were really affective and soo comfortable. As you don't want noise cancelling there are passive noise cancelling headphones which basically just muffle the sounds. Even though I haven't been able to block all the sounds out it's made such a different to my stress level as it's given me some control over what I hear.

I found having several options to cancel the noise lowers my SUDS Level allowing the security feel of having some control over the intensity of the external stimulus. C-PTSD (for me) can be triggered by lack of control which feeds into my fear implicit driver. So, you may find that a "good enough" set of solutions will defuse some of the spiraling after the initial reaction. A first step if you will.:hug:

Next, if it is in your home front ...sometimes everyone can have an agreement or may be on board with a quiet period for a short duration. Having specific go to's during this time for the wee ones (such as crayons, or whatever they are accustomed to) may assist in your immediate need set. *Rewards for little ones is strongly encouraged for when they try doubly hard to cooperate.:roflmao:

Public settings, perhaps excuse yourself (with social amenity) and use Mindfulness Breath Work for the quick center. As well I use a pressure point on my hand to ground my body until the breath work can take rythmn. A comfort piece of jewelry can substitute for the acupressure in one manner if that is not your thing. I use my cross at times.

But T session work (depending on your T ) may be excellent for establishing a positive trigger- if you will. A pattern that follows the sudden or overbearing noise to ease into that lull of some damage control armed with your choice of options. Best of wishes in your pursuit. ((((hugs))))

Thanks for your thoughts, @Recovery4Me . I am looking at headphones or the like for a short-term fix while I continue to work on all of the strategies to help tolerate noises. Noises have been my biggest problem in terms of how to apply strategies. I am thinking if I have headphones to block some of the noise, then I might be able to think more clearly about what I can do to help myself. My therapist is working with me on this as well.

Yea! I've noticed that as well, mind you, it did take me a long time to adjust to living alone, as I had never done that in all in my earlier life.

Some times, it still gets to me and I find it hard to cope?

Living alone isn't an option I am willing to consider with my 2 sons and husband here that I love even though my children's noises trigger me so often.
