Sufferer Diagnosed Two Years Ago. Military Spouse...why Can't They Understand?

New Here
Hello Everyone,

I was diagnosed with PTSD in April of 2011. I witnessed a suicide of someone very dear to me. In December of 2011 I was a victim of aggravated assault and watched an attempted suicide where the offender was also dear to me and suffered from PTSD as well.

Being a military spouse is difficult when you have PTSD. There are soldiers all over the world who have been through worse and have seen worse and I admit that. I have felt as if no one really recognizes how difficult it is for me dealing with basic daily things because I am always being compared to those soldiers.

I currently take Zoloft. (Yea right doesn't do anything) the effect wears off in about 3 hours and they have upped my dosage. Now it wears off in about 6. I haven't seen a psychiatrist in a long time but I'm starting to think it may be time to step up to the plate once again and face my problems.

Welcome! I'm new here, too. I think it's really unfair that you don't get the sympathy you deserve just because you're a military wife. Sure, there are soldiers who have gone through terrible things, and we're all very thankful for their sacrifices, but no one should say one person's trauma is worse than another's. Your pain is real, your symptoms are real. That's enough. I'm sorry you have had to go through all that.

Welcome to the forum @Mrs Bravo

There is no rhyme or reason to who gets PTSD. Don't worry about what another endures, because it's completely irrelevant in the scheme of you healing trauma and recovering PTSD. Focus on the issues that you experience, and that is your pathway through PTSD.

Hi Mrs. Bravo,

Welcome to MyPTSD forum! :)

Many people experience trauma at some point in their lives and some develop PTSD and others don't. It is the same with military personnel, as some will develop PTSD and others do not. Why one individual develops it and another doesn't is not clearly understood; but once you have been diagnosed, the important thing is to find what works best for yourself in healing.

I hope you find the information and support here beneficial to your own personal healing.

Take care.

Debbie

Hi and welcome.

I echo what has been said above. In fact, even though some of us have had similar trauma, how we re-act and our symptoms may be different. Plenty of great information and support here though.
