EEGs are non-invasive and have no know side effects. The flashing lights are there to stimulate a seizure or seizure precursor state in the brain.
When I was a young medic we had patients who had side effects from everything, even things that could not possibly induce side effects. We always put it down to expectation and fear. If you expect side effects, don't like doctors, hate hospitals, are afraid of bad results etc. any test can be an exhausting process leaving you pretty much as you've described.
