I have an appointment I did not schedule and would have not known about if I had not checked my healthevet. On the end of it said "DECANOATE" on the title which from research refers to a couple of shots.

Is this an appointment you've had already and don't recall attending? Or an upcoming appointment you don't recall making?

Have you called whoever the appointment is/was with to clarify what it's for?

No shots that I am aware of. If that was the case we would be in a line that circled the globe!
Ask what they are and why you need them?

A quick search is showing that it is most commonly used to treat schizophrenia. Do you have any other diagnoses than PTSD?

Does it give any more information on what drug it would be? You're right in that decanoate means a long acting injection- curious what it says before decanoate?

I don't have schizophrenia. I have severe PTSD, major depressive disorder, insomnia and ptsd related psychotic disorder NOS. All of those things are on my VA letter together.

@OldTiger - what have you been diagnosed with? And what medications do you take...
I have severe PTSD, major depressive disorder, insomnia and ptsd related psychotic disorder NOS. All of those things are on my VA letter together. Chlorpromazine 100 mg in the morning 400 mg at night, mirtazapine 7.5 mg at night, topiramate 100 gm at night 100 mg in the morning, prazosin 2 mg one in the morning 1 at noon 2 at bedtime, lamotrigine 400 mg in the morning, trazodone 250 mg at night, paroxetine 60 mg at night and prazosin 10 mg at night. Those are just my psychiatric there is more but they medical drugs to treat medical issues caused by ptsd.

That is a lot of meds. I don't mean that as a negative judgement against you - I'm more wondering if your prescribing physician has reviewed your chart lately.

Have you had a chance to ask your doc whether all of them might still be needed?

Sometimes it's easy to keep adding things on and doctors don't always think to eventually try and take things off. I've noticed that this especially happens when there is any kind of psychosis in the mix - even a combination that seems really stable can need to be re-evaluated periodically, and sometimes there are meds working too much at cross-purposes.

I'm not a doctor. My layman's guess would be that the injection is designed to help manage that psychotic disorder NOS. You should also be taking the Chlorpromazine specifically for that...I would be asking them if they are planning to continue the chlorpromazine, or if the haliperodal decanoate is meant to replace it.

Again - I am totally not a doctor - repeat, not a doctor - but were you recently put on the chlorpromazine? Or, were you hospitalized recently?

I know that they use a drug called flupenthixol decanoate in U.K. In low doses as an antidepressant so maybe it might be an injection to help with both your mood. It's wrong that they haven't spoken to you about this is person, it's good that you've picked it up and can ask them, is there anyone you can ring to confirm?
