General Does any sufferer have experience of neuropathy?

My sufferer has neuropathy, but his is from nerve damage related to combat injuries. He has pain, partial paralysis, tingling, numbness, and at times some instability walking. I’m not sure if his is related to PTSD or just his physical injuries.

I’ve got ptsd and have had neuropathy. A couple of different types, from a couple of different causes.

Always get it checked out - at least start with a go appointment. A lot of different types of neuropathy indicate something is getting worse, and losing control of arms or legs would very quickly make disability from ptsd look like a cake walk.

On the up side? A lot of types of neuropathy are from completely treatable causes.

Mines all from repeated injuries, and the occasional electrocution. Mostly it means I have zero proprioception from my knees down, muted pain response, and misc weirdness elsewhere in my body, (like not being responsive to electric shock in some areas), and a tendency to injure/reinjure areas that aren’t wired so well. I’ve broken my right foot/ankle… a couple dozen times? Usually takes me a couple weeks to notice. I just don’t feel it. Or assume it’s a fairly normal sprain (I prefer breaks, they heal in 6 weeks, a sprain takes 3-6mo).

An example? I snapped a tendon in my foot that rebounded into my calf a couple weeks ago. Didn’t know it. Just knew I woke up screaming from a cramp that stretched from my foot to my thoracic spine. (I’ve been having back spasms). It was only after everything ELSE calmed down, that I realized, huh. There’s a lump in my calf. And part of my foot doesn’t work right. (Although the rest compensates). This is the kind of thing that sends most people to the ER, and surgery, on day 1. Rather than… a few weeks later, oh… and booking an appt for 3mo from now. It’s just not an emergency for me. It’s annoying. But? If I didn’t have neuropathy from my knees down? I’d probably be pissing myself from pain, and doing the emergency surgery thing. As it is? I have a helluva lot worse going on with me I need sorted before this nonsense.

Once docs KNOW about the neuropathy, they visibly relax. Oh! Totally makes sense… xyz… abc…123. Although I suppose it’s odd for some people.

I have neuropathy in my feet, hands and legs. No known cause. I figure it’s part of the fibromyalgia but hard to know since depending on which provider I’m with the order of the two diseases are in question.

If you read The Body Keeps the Score you’ll learn almost anything can be a result of trauma so I don’t know that I care so long as the doctors and I have it under control enough to function.

It’s hard to know exactly how to describe it, the last two years I’ve been iron deficient which causes similar symptoms so it’s hard to peel apart which is which. I have numbness, tingling, electric shock feeling up my legs sometimes, and a feeling of extreme sweeping without actual swelling. It can also cause my feet to look really red and raw when it’s seriously out of control, not something I’ve had in awhile but I’ve been on Gabapentin for years now.

Not sure if I answered your question because I’m not clear on exactly what you want.

Thank you all for your contribution in responses. I was aware it seems not uncommon to see people who suffer ptsd also suffer neuropathy, as my sufferer has been suffering for both. But after reading your response, I think it could be due to association with military/combat experiences?

my sufferer's is mainly caused by exceeded alcohol consumption. I want to understand more how it affect him physically and mentally. Can it be life threatening? if you have followed my other threads, you know we don't communicate as much due to him pushing me away but I am worried about him and keen to understand better of this health condition so I know how to support him from distant.

Short answer is yes. But that’s because ‘neuropathy’ is really vague, and could mean dozens and dozens of different underlying issues.

Neuropathy, broadly, means “nerve illness”. It indicates that the nerves are damaged.

Damaged how is the question. My dad has CIPD, which is, broadly, neuropathy, which untreated would cost him the use of at least one arm. I have neuropathy in my feet from prolonged vitamin deficiency, which is now resolved, and will likely never amount to much more than a bit of tingling in my feet.

Getting the neuropathy diagnosed is the only way to answer the question of how serious it is.

My hands, I have little fine motor control (buttons are awful especially) and I don't notice overly hot water, feel numb and sort of like I'm wearing baseball gloves. I presume injuries. I have arthritis from my neck to toes, but my understanding is that is how the body naturally shores up the joint after dislocations and injuries.

PS Ergonomic tools (pens etc) hurt more to use for me than regular streamlined ones.

thanks for sharing, he has had a diagnosis from the doctor. What were the worst symptoms for you before you got it cured?

I am sorry you are having these. how long have you been suffering with it?
