is anyone willing to share their experience of what EMDR is like for them? I am considering it but am hesitant and honestly don't know much about it. Thanks in advance.

A friend suggested it to me by saying "it is horrible and awful and terrifying and it was the best thing I've ever done in my life". I was intrigued so I researched it, look at the science, talked to people who had done it and heard over and over, "it is horrible and awful and terrifying and it was the best thing I've ever done in my life"

So of course I had to try it! And yep...there are days I leave my appointments seriously questioning WTH I am thinking. And there are days when I'm so grateful I'm doing it that I could cry. Sometimes I have to relive memories that are horribly painful, and sometimes I walk out with a completely different view of a memory that has haunted me for years

I know that is not the answer you are looking for and I'm sorry I can't offer more, but EMDR is different for everyone. The worst thing you can do is rush into it, so make sure you have a therapist you trust who has explained how it works and answers all your questions. Then, give it a try.

@Freida i appreciate your honesty. I've read about it, I'm going to call a center tomorrow to see about more information. I have been in talk therapy over 5 years which I will still do, I just need something else as well. Medications have little effect on me and honestly I'm tired of living like this and being terrorized by the past when I'm not even sure why half the time. I heard it can be intense and I think that's always made me fearful but I think I'm at the point of looking at other options now bc what I've been doing hasn't been working great.

Hey I have been in therapy for a few months and had my first EMDR session this week. It was quite profound for me. For me it was kind of like being under hypnosis where I had flashes of memories, dreams, thoughts and feelings I have had over the last few years. They came up in a sequence that kind of told a story and has helped me to see the bigger picture and understand things in a new light if that makes sense. xx
