I just read all of the posts on this thread over the last couple of days.

No, we will never be what we were before, but we wouldn't even if we didn't have PTSD. We change as we go thru life, everyone does. I agree with you KP, we can actually be better people precisely because of our traumas. Wow, that's a totally different perspective that we usually have about our traumas isn't it!

I am glad this thread is inspiring those reading it. It is to me as well.

I too still get triggered jka....yes, it is part of it. I get frustrated when it happens. There is a part of me that wants to believe that once I do all the hard work of processing that I shouldn't get triggered anymore. That just isn't the case. Even people without PTSD get triggered and suffer negative emotions, it's part of being human. I guess the key is that we need to have learned new coping skills and then practice them enough so they kick in quickly, hopefully some day automatically, quickly. IF I REMEMBER to think of the times I get triggered as a chance to practice my new skills I find that I bounce back much faster. I am really working at practicing mindfulness skills every day, even when not triggered to try to make it more automatic.

It is developing the knowledge of what is triggering and having confidence in the grounding techniques which help me manage my symptoms.

I went to the theatre last night, I knew I may struggle so took steps to minimise affects. They worked and I had a good night and I was proud I did it.

Haha, spoke to soon. Set off for a community car drive and saw one of the trucks which caused my accident - it looked exactly the same and from the same company.:speechless::ninja:

I'm so sorry KP. That sucks. Hang in there and don't give up.....you're learning and it will keep getting easier. (((KP)))

Iam, thanks for your insight...its good to remember that negative emotions are just a part of life. Having reasonable hopes means we have less a chance of being let down.

This stuff is so sad.

Sorry I'm so late to the party, this is wonderful Iam, I am so happy for you!!:) :inlove:

I think it's great that there are so many different techniques out there to try that can help lead us to healing. This whole thread is really inspirational, it shows what's possible, how hard work and persistence can pay off, how finding our own personal path to healing can be worth all the failures, setbacks, etc. we may face first to get there.

I completely agree with the idea that while you may not be able to be the same person you were before the trauma, you can be an even better person than you were before. I can also identify with still experiencing bad days, negative thoughts, bad things that happen, even though I'm better, because as mentioned above, that's just part of life. However I know I'm dealing with the negative things differently, and the past no longer comes as extra baggage to make me feel crushed when I'm feeling down. I know there was a time when I didn't know if I'd be comfortable not feeling the fear, not feeling stuck, not having anything to feel so broken over. Thinking back now it seems silly to have found comfort in those negative feelings, and beliefs, but I understand that they served a purpose to keep me safe at the time, and I can forgive myself for not letting go of them sooner.
