Experiences With Paxil Or Vistaril

Finally got to see my Dr. Today after a battle with my insurance company. She compounded the PTSD diagnosis and said antidepressants and a preventative care medicine will be vital for me in the stage that I am at. She prescribed Paxil and hydroxyzine (vistaril)... I am very paranoid of pharmaceuticals and wish that I didn't have to take them but I know I'm beyond what I can handle without it. So anyone here in the community have experiences, tips, stories, etc. About either drug?
Thank you all!

I took Paxil for two days, at 10 mg... it made my metabolism so high it was ridiculous! I was eighteen or nineteen at the time. I was bouncing off the walls, had to eat two dinners because I got so hungry again, was so energic I was forgetting things and I'm pretty sure I almost had a heart attack. I went to hospital on the third day and they had to give me a shot to counter the affects of the pill.

This was on a really low dose.

I personally don't do well on pills at all, and have only had bad experiences.

I focus on healthy eating, exercise, etc. to get me by.

Thank you hopefully I dont experience this but I appreciate knowing some things to watch for! And i agree I hate to have to rely on medication...I just know that at this point it may well be the thing that saves my life.

Lmao your all good I know the feeling! But all the same that is an SSRI I know they are slightly different but all take basically the same path once in the brain...although im no med grad lol

So far I am not liking the Paxil. Can't tell if it is because I have testing today at the docs and cannot eat until they are done, but...I feel pretty nauseas....lightheaded...spacey...Just overall strange. Had a headache when I woke up. I hope this isn't a permanently there side effect because I will just go back to Cannabis if thats the case.

The initial side effects usually wear off. Personally I just restarted Paxil last month, lowest dose. Side effects have passed, but I'm not sure if how I'm feeling now is better or worse. I was injuring, exploding at everything, anxiety was unbearable. Now, anxiety is less overwhelming but still very real, other symptoms got better, but I feel more disconnected, more numb, less inclined to put on a face and pretend I'm ok. Next appointment is tomorrow, so we shall see.

Today has been terrible..Major nonstop headache, off and on nausea of a pretty bad degree, and heart palpitations...racing heartbeat.....should I be worried??? Also, will I have withdrawal if I skip my dose of Paxil tonight? I've only took 3 20 mg doses so far. Very concerned....

The best way to think of initial side effects is to compare it to a very bad flu or cold. So accepting that you will physically feel ill, and not panicking too much over it. The kinds of side effects to be more concerned about are the mental ones - if there is a real shift in your POV, thoughts that didn't used to overwhelm you suddenly cause extended bouts of weeping, or the opposite - you feel like you are flying high, on top of the world. That's the sort of stuff that will warrant immediate stoppage.

You won't go through a withdrawal if you skip a dose at this point, but it's also not going to make a bit of difference, really. Either you can stick it out for a week/10 days through your initial titration and then evaluate how you feel, or you should just stop.

I remember when I went on my first med - Cymbalta - I felt like such crap, and also had strange things like trouble urinating, my mouth tasted like copper...and I really did panic that something bad was happening. The panic then created some increased BP and racing thoughts. If I had not gotten constant reassurance that this was completely normal, I'd not have kept taking it. Altogether, it took me a month to titrate to a working dose, but the most significant side effects passed around day 6. Some funny little ones kept on until I was a good 6 weeks in.

It does take some gritting of the teeth. I'd look at it this way - you need to give it a proper try in order to know whether or not it works. You're already into the process - if you can push through the physical discomfort til day 10, then, you'll know if you can tolerate it.

As I said - if your side effects are predominantly mental, that's different. But if they aren't, my personal recommendation (from experience) is to stick with it.

(For context - I've had seriously bad reactions as well. In both, the mental effects far outweighed the physical effects. The general exception to this rule is side effects that are visibly physical: rashes, hives, swelling, loss of motor function, high fever - these indicate physical intolerance).

Well I'll update anyone who's interested. Had a TERRIBLE day yesterday on the Paxil. I was an inch from going to the ER at several points. I felt at times like I had the flu. Otther times it felt more akin to a severe, long lasting panic attack..or a heart attack. I also felt at times like I was in a movie, watching everything happen from above in third person instead of actually being a part of it...this was terrifying...I had dilated pupils and at times my nausea was so bad i was forced to lay down...dizzy and lightheaded, almost like I wasnt getting enough air...I called several pharmacists and told them of my concerns and side effects, and was advised to stop the paxil until I see my Dr. On Tuesday..I left her a voicemail at the office letting her know what happened and a brief as to why. Now I'm feeling better today. Still freaked out over yesterday though. And more than anything I am just plain DISCOURAGED

I'm glad you called a pharmacist as they can parcel out what is a side effect that is dangerous vs one that is just due to adjustment to the new med that will likely let up.

I've been on quite a few meds over the years and I've never had bad reactions to starting them like you're experiencing. Mine were more on the level of one effect each---made me too tired, caused a spike in my weight, etc. I've never experienced the flu like stuff until it was time to come off it.

Maybe this med isn't for you.
