It took forever and a day but I finally got a call back. I have had two sessions so far and she seems really great. She is young but she really seems to know her stuff. I never had a therapist work with me to develop a treatment plan before. It I think she is exactly what I need.
For those who are unaware of my struggles to find a therapist, this is huge. Mental health in my area is horrifying. It practically doesn't exist. Therapists are in short supply and have insanely long waiting lists. I have heard up to two years for some, no less than 4 months for most.
There is a university that has a a psychiatry department that pretty much holds a monopoly on mental health here. They contract with the government agencies and receive all kinds of grants but they don't seem to do anything. All crisis lines whether raain, national domestic violence, or suicide help line; go through them. They aren't will only provide referrals to someone else who will give you more referrals. Heaven forbid you actually need to talk to someone. Did I mention that the director published a paper stating pollution is the cause of suicide? I don't think pollution even begins to address the fact that locally there is a suicide every 16 hours.
Sorry for the rant. Even though I am happy to find a therapist that I believe is going to do a lot to help me, I am just a tad bitter that it took this long.
Today is the Anniversary of my worst trauma so I am extra thankful I was able to see someone who helped me develop a coping plan. Today is going to be rough, but I have help now, and that makes me feel hopeful.
