First Day On Prozac

Well, I went to the Psychiatrist yesterday. Before that, I was having this huge breakdown. Probably like..a really, really intense panic attack. I'm not even sure if I can pin point the reason. Total dread.
It was almost as if I was like an animal in shock, I just sat there, frozen, weeping and hyperventilating for a long time. I'm actually surprised I didn't pass out.

Anyway, I put my big kid pants on, brushed my teeth, and bused to the clinic for my appointment. Blah blah, interview stuff. It was a little weird having to go over the initial interview info all over again. She prescribed me Prozac, and we're easing onto it. Starting out smaller and increasing over the course of a few weeks.

My biggest worry was side effects. It's where a lot of my fear resides. I think I'm going to die the moment I take a pill, comparing it to poison or something. I popped my first dose this morning and guess what happened. Aside from my initial panic from taking a med, I got sleepy. That was it!

The real effectiveness is supposed to happen in a few weeks, but even just feeling a little bit more drowsy takes the edge off of feeling so alert all the time. I'm looking forward to this journey. I think it can really help.

I'm deathly allergic to benzos and have to wear a medical alert anklet.

That said, @Senecia super happy :D you went to your appointment and have something that may help!

I had surgery at Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children at age 8, and it is a teaching hospital. On the 4th of July my knee got stuck out of joint, and could not be put back in. So they sliced the skin and poked with a needle until they found the nerves they needed, and got he knee back in. They gave me Ativan for pain and I lost three days of life. No idea what happen. =/ Then at about 12 I was given a Valium and all I remember is vomiting all over casting :(. I have no idea what happened, apparently I tried to leave my bed with my leg strung up in the cast, they found me between the bars with my hands on the floor. I raved that they were going to kill me, and it was a hospital of death. lol. I only know any of this because of the visitors i had in the coming days. >.< Apparently i screamed at nurses and they said i seemed possessed. I've worn a medical alert ever since.

I've had Prozac several times in my life, and just started back on it on my own after quitting it on my own (by which I mean my doctor doesn't know that, I only see her about every 4 months). I know, bad boy for messing around with it. Shame on me.

Anyhow, I consider it to be really benign in terms of side effects for me - after I take it I do get a slight queasy feeling of very minor stomach irritation - I just eat something like a few pretzels or a piece of bread and its fine. The other thing is a temporary, usually 1-2 week, bout of minor sexual side effects, nothing that doesn't pass quickly.

Honestly I think of it on the level of aspirin or OTC allergy pills in terms of the side effects - no big deal.

OTOH - don't even get me started on what Lamictal did to me ... Yikes!
