News Food Donations To Hurricane Sandy Victims Banned

Food donations to homeless shelters has been banned ever since March. The Mayor wants to control the diet of the people in his city. He refuses to lift the ban even during this recent tragedy. I think this is ridiculous. I understand he wants his city to be healthy but it isn't healthy to starve them. There were restaurants and other establishments that use to donate and no longer are able to because of the restrictions he now has.

I can't believe he is getting away with this, personally, during these tragic times. Yet he is asking the government for a lot of money for their relief. He wouldn't need as much if he allowed places and people to donate food to the homeless shelters.

I think this is a direct backlash of what many people have fought so hard for, being political correctness. They want it one way, but not the other.

The flipside to this argument, which is also relevant, is that starving people also then get sick, then get lawyers who will use them to sue the agency / Government, that gave them food poisoning.

Most of such things all got canned here in Australia long ago due to hygiene regulations and laws, and insurance companies not covering the companies for donating food. If they throw it out in the waste bin, and they take adequate measures to secure the bins until rubbish collection, then if someone breaks into the binned area and takes the food, then gets sick, it isn't the companies issue.

Again... this is all due to what many have argued and pushed society towards IMHO... political correctness. Now its biting people on the arse left, right and center, because the positives can be spun into negatives far too easily.

I'm sure that's part of it. The mayor's concern is that they couldn't control the fat, salt, etc., in donated food. He wants to control the eating habits for what he says are health reasons. He wants his city to be healthy. On one hand I get it, because he doesn't want the cost of the uninsured. However, in a tragedy, sometimes you have to give a little.

His plan isn't just limited to homeless shelters, he also wants the hospitals to make follow the guidelines. Not of food donations, but the amounts of salt, fat, etc.

Government control! US law, if it is in the dumpster it is public property. Including cast out credit cards, mail etc!

Pathetic but we have to be responsible for our trash!
