Former Soldier Gets Excited By Drill Sergeant

First off this is not a problem. More social.

I am married a former soldier of over 30 years. When he hears an instructor yelling out orders at his men whether it be in a movie or song my husband gets excited. It pumps him up and gives him goose bumps. It takes him back to his glory days and his brain is triggered by what I will call mental muscle memory and floods him with adrenolin and feel good hormones.

We play with each other. Like he has taught me voice procedure and the lingo and we will have conversations about make believe operations and he loves it. I love it because he does and it is fun for me to. Not all the time just sometime when we play.

Does this happen to you or your SO? Does the sharp orders and insults (yes that part to) of drill sergeant take them (or you) back to their happy place?

On a somewhat unrelated note then I am wondering if when he is triggered if I should try a more direct line of communication instead of just wait and be patient. I wonder if a firm tone and taking charge would actually help him snap out of it? Any one ever try to do that?

That's sweet.
Maybe ask him if he'd be cool with experimenting with that approach.

Best wishes.

I'd ask him if he'd like to try that when he's feeling well sometime.

I don't know if he gets excited, but he enjoys reminiscing and drill sergeant humor.

I will talk to him about it. In normal situations between us he is not submissive like that nor is he head boss in charge. He is very good about being equals. We give and take on everything. He is having a hard time now and I just wondered. Worth a discussion anyway. Hard to say because when he is good sometime he likes me to take charge like of big plans and sometime it seems to stress him even if I am in control.

The planning thing happens with my vet too. I make most arrangements, but he still stresses.

It makes me smile. It's language I can understand & cuts through all the BS in my head.

Interesting. Sounds like it is not about relinquishing control but just grabbing your focus and forcing you to pay attention?

One of my favorite jokes is:

Drill Sergeant - Cadet, I didn't see you at camouflage training today!

Cadet - Thank you Sir!
