I live in canada and when I got my firearms license I was taught that if any of us aren't in the right mind to have a gun in our house, even if it's just a month or so, you can ask the RCMP (Canada's police and intelligence agency basically) to hold them for you if you cant trust anyone else to store them. I'm sure you can do that in the United states as well with your local precinct, just give them a call on their non emergency number before you show up to the station with a gun case. Stay safe, and keep your powder dry.
