I have been doing a ton of reserch on sleep disorders and PTSD. And there are a few articles out there that suggest that Hypersomnia may be a result of PTSD as well. I know I personally have boughts of insomnia when life gets stressful or when I have a particular trigger keep recurring. But my boyfriend who is also a sufferer, he will have these boughts where is will sleep for 48 hours or more. I am starting to think that his sleeping habits are more than just how his body deals with pain. He is rather stubborn and choses to try and fix his issues on his own but i was just curious to know if anyone else out here suffers with similar sleep issues!

It's true that its a dissaciative response to stress but the problem is that with my boyfriend its cyclical which makes me believe that there is more to it than that! He's seeing his doc today and asked me to write down what my concern was because afterall he doesn't really see what I see. He's actually being very responsive to my concern which I think is a major turning point for us!

Good luck with that, I hope the doctor can give a helpful diagnosis or carry out some tests.

I take hours and hours to get to sleep, I'd try everything milky drinks before bed, exercise..I'll be awake feeling tired but jumping at every noise, it was torture, feeling so exhausted but anxious too..then finally at around 6am or 6.30am I might fall asleep..then I'll be asleep for hours sometimes until 3pm. Luckily I am off work at the moment on sick leave after having a psychosomatic seizure and being diagnosed with PTSD.

Last night though was different, I took the doc's advice and took anti-hystamine hayfever tablets for the drowsy effect they have and I had a full night's sleep which I haven't had in months and months - so it felt great..but I woke up at around midday which wasn't so great. I wanted to go back to bed but got up had a shower and got dressed, Im going to go out somewhere just to get fresh air. Plus im anxious because there are things I need to do later in the week (all afternoon/evening stuff) but I want to try to get a normal pattern going again so I can function and not be sleepy. Having been up and bout for a few hours I feel ok and have been listening to upbeat music to help.

If your bf has had any helpful suggestions or even better a possible diagnosis, I'd like to know as this is all very strange to me and has been going on since october. My doctor..I'll be honest with you isn't very good and makes very obvious suggestions all the time about the sleep so I have given up with trying to explain.

Lil-fighter I am sorry your are going through all this. Unfortunately my BF never made it to the doctor that day! Instead he slept until 4pm and unfortunately I had to be at work so I could not get him out of bed.

My suggestion to you is that you keep looking for a doctor who understands you! I am in search of someone aswell for my bf as he seems to be incapable of doing anything much these days. Its been 3 weeks and hes left the house once! He sleeps for 18-48 hours in a row and then is awake for more than 24. It's very difficult on his body!

But I think you have the right idea about a regular routine, reguardless of how tired you feel! Keep being stong like that and I believe you will get through this!!!:)

Hi Iwanttolovehim,

Would love to know if you ever got an answer. I have severe long term insomnia but sometimes click over into phases of hypersomnia that are definitely not about catching up on sleep. In some ways the insomnia is easier to manage as truly cannot really on doing anything when in a hypersomnia stage.

I am SO grateful that I found this post--- and that it is not old. I am currently dealing with something similar with my boyfriend and I am starting to get worried. He has been asleep now for 36 hours. I went to check on him last night and he said he couldnt get up. He has very vivid dreaming and doesn't want to leave them (he also cant get up from the tiredness). The day prior he slept for 18 hours. He also has bouts of where he is up for 24-48 hours and will then sleep for a long time. This is the first time I have witnessed it at this length and I am just looking to get some guidance so that I can help him figure this out.

I find this as well. Today I slept most of the day. I am totally and utterly knackered. I am also annoyed as I had so many things I wanted to do :(

What is annoying is, no matter how much I sleep I don't feel any better. I am still bloody knackered!

Hi Anna,

I totally relate. Its almost as if the more I sleep the more exhausted I get. I literally feel drugged. My life comes to a halt. Have decided I prefer my "normal" severe insomnia to these rare phases of mine. At least with that I am up whilst being exhausted and barely functional. Nothing gets done when one is literally out for the count.
