This is just one link of one study for one demographic of PTSD that involves people with PTSD and sleep difficulty due to nightmares. Prazosin was originally conceived as a blood pressure medication, I believe, but it was also found to stop the trauma-based nightmares of sufferers. This use is currently considered "off label."

I'm an old undergrad in Biology doing a research project, and my mentor was talking about it. He knows I have PTSD and mentioned the findings of other studies was really positive so far, too!

I take clonidine for the same reason - it has helped immensely with the ability to get to sleep and decreases the intensity of the nightmares. Both medications are alpha-blockers and work to stop the noradrenaline response in the brain. It also helps with pain signaling and can decrease the need for pain killers.

I took prazosin for about a month. I also have narcolepsy and take adderall during the day. The took me off and switched me to clonidine..then another, lisinopril, and will be going in for a different one tomorrow. I suffered a mild stroke due to interactions, and chemistry. But I am glad to hear positive feedback as they want to perscribe it to my three children. Any thoughts to ease a moms nerves on that would be graetly appreciated.

My doctor suggested I try Prazosin, but he told me it would cause me to have no dreams at all. I thought this was weird. Don't our brains NEED to dream?

I said no thanks, but I may reconsider depending on what I hear about it with other people...

Right now I use Klonopin which allows me to sleep all the way through the night, but I still wake up with nightmares in the morning, and feel that I didn't sleep deeply.

Still, I'm much more rested in the morning and alert than I was with the other meds I tried: Ambien, Xanax and Benadryl...

Fort Lewis was doing a nightmare study to this usage to be placed on label usage of Prazosin. I have graduated from the study.. I want to say I love this drug. Yes I still have nightmares - but they are no longer as terrifying. It is like I am looking at them through a glass of water or with my glasses off. They are blurry and do send adrenaline through me. When I wake up, I can get right back to sleep. What I especially like is that its major side effect for me is that I get thirsty.... the ambien I was on would give me BADDDD hallucinations. It also does not give you the sleeping pill hangover that some of them can. I can deal with an extra glass of water or two. Also it works really fast. IF you have nightmares - talk to your doc about this.
