[Need an Oasis]

My psychiatrist has suggested that I find a support community and pointed me to this forum. I have been diagnosed with combat PTSD (Iraq) and am seeing a brilliant psychiatrist since September who has helped me a lot so far. I'm not ready to talk about what happened, on here, but just seeing that there are others out there helps. I'm about to get married to a truly wonderful man in July (also a vet but PTSD-free), and it's a difficult relationship because he's on the other side of the world from me right now. We communicate with Skype, MSN, and phone calls and e-mail. Mostly I'm just tired.

Firstly, welcome to the forum. It might surprise you to know that the majority of veterans on here don't ever discuss their traumas. Thats for the psych's generally. Unless you are stuck and have to get it off your chest.

The way we work here is that you can basically say what you want and discuss what you want. The only stipulation is respect and don't personally attack anyone.

Now for the twenty questions.... Nah, only three.
Where do you live, who did you serve with and where in Iraq?? All the guys and gals here would be interested. We have Aussies, US Navy, Marines, Air Force, Army, Canadians, Pommies, and even some people from different conflicts. Our one thing in common is 'The Beast' called PTSD.

Welcome. What Jimmy meant to say was there are Marines, and then there is everyone else. But thats ok...Aussies get things backwards a lot... (dont they call it the land down under for a reason?)

Hi Jimmy and Lee C,

Thanks for the welcome. Right now I live in the suburbs of Washington, DC, but in July I will move to South Africa to marry my fiance. He is a remote site medic now, providing medical support for a copper mine in the north of Zambia. I served with the US Army in Mosul and Baghdad.

Ah, reddevil, I understand about Aussies. My best and closest friend is an Aussie. I have learned to decipher them, mostly. :)

You learnt Aussi? Wow! I didn't think Aussi's really understood aussis! Can you put out a short instructional pamplet for the rest of us?

Oh, and Reddevil, you are right! There are Marines and then the rest of us. The easiest way to tell the differance is the rest of us tend to use multi-syllable words correctly.

Well the easiest way I've found to deal with my Aussie friends is to think of them as having had 10 beers and slurring their speech. I usually get some meaning out of a sentence if I do that!
