Hi All - PTSD Can Be Beaten

Mark, while I appreciate what you say PTSD is a psychological change to the brain which, at this point of time, is not repairable or curable.

I will say however that PTSD is manageable and there can be astounding differences due to varying factors. For example Anthony's ex mother in law said to Anthony she could not believe the change in him since being with me. She said that her daughter and Anthony were not compatible which was made more obvious to her by the way Anthony is now. So, even something as simple as the dynamics of the people around you can have a resulting effect on PTSD which is more than just management - as the management is no longer required due to the stressor being removed.

Nicolette, I appreciate what you say and I understand that PTSD is a psychological change to the brain but that does not mean that it is irreversible?? The Subconcious mind is so powerful please dont just dismiss it, even it helps one other person with PTSD then surely it is an avenue that should be explored further? Or does everyone just except they will be told to live with it, learn coping techniques, have cognative behavioural therapy etc?

Mark -

While I believe that your subconcious can be dealt with in order to help your symptoms improve - I do not believe that PTSD is curable. I am excepting that I am being told to live with it - with coping skills - and with the hope that my symptoms will improve. Acceptance (IMO) is an important part of any chronic health issue.

Having said that - I am thrilled that your symptoms have improved so greatly and that you are feeling so much better.

I am putting a link here and just ask people to go to the video at the bottom and listen thats all and I am in no way connected at all to any counsellor/practice the only reason this is here is because this is what helped me to cure PTSD over the last few years and I am not saying it will not come back but I have been put in more stressful situations than I ever was and it has not affected me. If you live in the UK this treatement if you have been diagnosed with PTSD can be made available free of charge.

Surely it is worth looking into it? I wont post again as I have had my say and I wish everyone on here the very best for the future.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the link. It sounds like something I'd be willing to try, absolutely. I'm in the U.S. and there are no counsellors in U.S. in the register on the human givens site.

I have, however, sent them an email to see if it's something that a counselor here could learn (well enough) without having to attend a seminar(s).

Thanks again for the information.

I've tried 'imagining' my trauma away - it kinda didn't resolve the recurrence of symptoms. I can rationalize and use logic to understand the circumstances of my trauma and I do actually BELIEVE this logic, I know for a fact that the trauma is not occurring again, I know that it was a rare occurrence and the likelihood of it happening again are slim to none, however the symptoms still exist and cause disarray in my day to day function. So sorry, Human Givens theory of 'buck up and deal with it' doesn't really work for me. Good on you if it works for you but humans are individual and will react as such, some are perhaps more suggestable than others and thus respond well to this type of therapy.

Good point....

But still, the brain is highly plastic and I have to believe somewhere in the depths of my soul that it can be rewired to a certain extent.

But FACE IT FOLKS..........after trauma, we will never be the same.

For those of us who have early childhood abuse.......we'll, I'll likely always be more fragile, more easily sink into clinical depression, and more hypervigilant than others for the rest of my life.

But I can rewire some of that and live a more functional existence. If this helps.....groovy.

Mark, did you have an MRI to confirm you have PTSD? If not, then there is no way you could state you 100% had it and that instead you where not simply suffering ASD instead.

I concur with you, that there are methods that do show promise, though nothing is conclusively proving any success towards a cure for PTSD. If something helps one person, does that make it a viable treatment or approach to use the word "cure" towards it? No... sorry, it doesn't. LRS is a member here and has stated always that he was cured of PTSD, he did have an MRI to prove he had it, and he taught himself to be ambidextrous which does have scientific fact behind the principle that it can cause the brain to chemically imbalance. This worked on the theory that it had undone what had been done due to trauma, and an after MRI had shown his amygdala had returned to its normal size. This is also one person... and whilst viable, the fact remains that science has no conclusive method to cure PTSD to date.

I and other members ensure all techniques are raised upon this forum, so that people can choose for themselves because no one treatment option will treat all. What works for one may not work for another, but will for another.

I appreciate your writing, but honestly, it all sounds like marketing and promotion to me. From your first post, all marketing. You may say its not, but it comes across as such, especially when you only have one technique to push... this now makes you no longer non-biased, because instead of offering to people a range of techniques for them to try, you push only one agenda... See my point?

Hi! I'm new here too. I don't know what is correct to say so please don't misunderstand me but I'd certainly like to think PTSD can be 'beat'. We all know that we're reactive to things we don't even know are triggers sometimes. For instance, I allowed my PTSD to progress to the point where I began ducking phone calls . It doesn't matter who is calling, just the ring of the phone makes me walk into another room so I don't hear it! My point is that this nice man offered up his story that he has his PTSD beaten and something in that statement caused a reaction that wasn't positive. Perhaps the reaction itself is the PTSD manifesting in some way.
I've had this for 18 years. It's just long enough to know that I never know where on earth or how on earth it's going to manifest. I'm baffled by an awful lot of it of course. 18 years ago I was a victim of domestic violence, spent 3 years being stalked, was poisoned, had a terrible trip down the justice system while my baby was in a kidnapping situation, and then thought I could dig myself out of my own trauma. By the time I got therapy the PTSD was just ingrained. 5 years of amazing therapy has healed hugely but my therapist had to retire and I just can't get it together to go find a new one to trust! That's why I'm here. I actually do think that given more years with my therapist I would have managed it succesfully and labeled it beaten.
I'd like to think there is hope, that's all.

Anni--
It's not so much that there isn't hope, just that to date a "cure" hasn't really been found. We are able to use different techniques to better control our symptoms. Having dealt with PTSD for so long, as you have, I'm sure you realize that symptoms wax and wane over time. Just because a person finds their self to be symptom free does not mean that they are cured.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Keep reading and contributing to threads. This is a wonderful resource for both information and support.

Hi Anni... what Cat said. This forum has a very clear agenda... to not BS people or members. Give the truth, then what each person does that is up to them, but atleast they have been given the truth based on current science and facts.

Welcome to the forum.
