Hi - Hold My Hand A While, I'm Scared Of You

Not open for further replies.
All stirred up today - going through the "did i make a fool of myself" and back into my old chestnut of trying to work out why I seem to get stuck in dynamics like this with people, playing out something i don't yet understand. Trying to work it out is all very well but when it becomes "real" and out there ,like yesterday ,it's a whole new ballgame.

Does anyone else seem to find themselves repeatedly being the one certain people have a problem with? Just certain sorts of people (and not people I particularly like!) and i'm pretty sure it's playing out something - maybe for me as well as them, well that's a novel thought! - but I'm tired of it. As they say, I'm a lover not a fighter

Thoughts on this subject would be much appreciated!!

Welcome to the forum Helliepig. You're doing great at venting out. We all know that it's not always easy in therapy even less when we have to go through the grieving phases. There's a candle lite for you today, for guiding warmth.

thanks Froggie for your kind words and thoughts.
What I'm wondering today is what is the grieving supposed to feel like?
How do you know it's grieving and not just more mixed up shit to process before you can grieve?.....

This stuff is so confusing. One minute we're processing traumatic episodes and I have this fantasy (probably wrong) that just over this next piece it'all fall into place.... now I've had to switch direction to grieving and yet I feel as fragmented as ever and what I thought were sign posts have disappeared!!

We did a schema of all my parts and it IS all still very fragmented - I'm not multiple but my therapist commented that in some ways i function like one. It was quite upsetting to see the distance and loneliness between the parts.

We think part of me is still "dead". Last night i was trying to communicate with my little girl in my grandma's house (she was a sociopath who abused me from being a baby and had a big cold lonely house) The little girl was weaing a dress and looking at the tiles on the hall floor. Next to her suddenly appeared a flat lifeless brown object- almost like one of those rubber chickens you can buy!!!! - i took it/her to my safe place and asked her what she needed. Turned out to be a hospital bed with lifesupport equipment all around her and I left her tucked up and propped up against clean soft white sheets with some big techi stuff taking the effort out of trying to survive.
This imagery stuff is actually really powerful once you dare do it - but when you get these parts of you into your safe place i find it really stirs my head into mush - perhaps they are starting to try to merge ??
Sadly 2011 is still not yet feeling any easier. Day to day is still a huge struggle for me

ps i think i'm dong well keep coming back - trying to break the old pattern of feeling panicky and foolish and pulling away from people/things after the initial contact...............

Got a handle on the grieving thing today. I used to look back at what i remembered of my childhood, and yearn for some of it in a way i didn't understand, given how horrid it was. I had to concede, somewhat reluctantly, that there probably were some good moments but also realised that some of what I for were the fantasies that I created that made life bearable. Not surprising part of me wants those moments back!!

But i KNEW they weren't representative of what it was really like, and I just couldn't work out what I was supposed to be grieving for - a bunch of people i yearn for that were cruel to me and that I don't want anything to do with? I just couldn't square the circle.

It suddenly dawned on me i have to grieve what COULD AND SHOULD have been, what i haven't had, and all the filthy pain and difficulties and losses it has made me spend my life to date having. The loss of where i wanted to be compared to where i am. And the pain of those bits of me that i have recently discovered through processing some of their trauma, that have spent years in a freezing wilderness.

Still not quite sure how to do it all, but maybe i can see a pathway emerging through the fog................

Hi Hellipig. Just wanted to send you a note of support and encouragement to say it sounds like you're doing an amazing job and making huge progress. In answer to your query a couple of posts ago, which you have since more or less answered yourself, grieving and processing aren't mutually exclusive processes that happen one after the other. Instead, they're both tied up together as part of a huger process of remembering, confronting, integrating, building, revisiting and rebuilding. At every twist and turn in the road there will be processing as you try to accept and internalise the meaning or significance of something, and as part of that there will be an element of grief for the hurt that was inflicted on you, for the suffering, for the things you had and the things you didn't have. Likely there will be other things - anger, fear, perhaps a little acceptance... then some more of all of the above at the next turn.

I say all of that to say that there are so, so many stops and starts along this road... what I afectionately call "the road to wherever", which in my mind symbolises the fact that I really don't know where it's going to take me next, only that I'm moving, and somehow, some day, i'm going to get somewhere.

And I understand too about that feeling of anxious "what have i done" that you experience after you have shared certain things, either here, in thereapy or wherever. I think it's a normal and to-be-expected symptom of how difficult it is to disclose in the first place, and it's natural to have some doubts and worries about that afterwards. But you're doing great in hanging in there, persisting, trying to think through and validate your own thoughts and feelings as you're doing in therapy, and just continuing to stay in touch. That all takes enormous courage and commitment, and you have all of those things.

Keep trucking mate, you're doing a great job, and it's great to continue to hear of your progress.

Hey thanks maddog, you wrote a really encouraging post.
It is all rather bewildering isn't it! You do wonder if your poor brain can actually make sense of it all, and worry that perhaps it's too much for one little person...

Thank you xx

Weekends are a big problem. I've just been reading a post about how we desperately keep ourselves busy in order to avoid our stuff. I've kind of stopped doing that partly cos I know I have to in order to face the underlying stuff, but also because I just don't feel like I believe in anything anymore. My legendary energy and drive has all dried up.

Once I do get going with something I can forget stuff and enjoy myself, and I am allowing myself at those times to live in the moment, so that is a step forward. But the end of that and coming home, I feel disorientated and afraid and "out of options."

This weekend is not too bad as I have my 8 year old son - it's the weekends where he goes to his dad's that i crash and burn, deep hole here I come.

But even this weekend feels un-do-able. I don't want to do anything and I don't want to do nothing. I crave being part of a family with people that want to interact and share my life on a menial level on a daily basis, nothing fancy, nothing perfect, just ordinary belonging and relating I have never had. I am tired of filling my diary to try and pretend I belong - then coming home to this.

I have joined an " adventure" group for singles - already been abseiling with them - but I know I have issues around intimacy, fear, relationships and a phobia of socialising where you all just meet - without rock faces to focus on!!!!! So still feeling stuck. I think part of me is not ready to move forward yet, still angry and shocked that I am in this situation despite all the efforts I have made over many years and probably child parts that are coming up that are terrified by the fact that the abandonment and loneliness and chaos around other people is still here in 2011.

So all i can do is go with it and hope, like with a lot of other bits of therapy, that things "the other side" can look and feel different in ways you just can't imagine.

Hx

Hi Helliepig. Ah, once again you hit the nail on the head so accurately in terms of my own feelings and experiences too. Yes, weekends are so very hard, they've long been a huge obstacle for me, and this one is no exception. Good for you on joining the singles group, though of course I understand the hidden traps of human connection that come along with that too.

You're right, it is the simple, mundane, everyday aspects of belonging to a family that I long for mostly, and sometimes the hurt of knowing that I may never know those things feels intolerable. I guess we need to always have hope that as you say, somewhere on the other side of therapy and all of life's work that we are doing, might lie a different sort of reality. Hope's all we've got afterall...

Hey maddog at least we're in it together!!!
When you try and tell other people they say " but it's nice to have time to yourself, and families aren't perfect you know!"
AGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
