Hi everyone.

I'm JJ. I'm a 29 year old female. Currently single, not dating. I was recently diagnosed with PTSD in May 2016. I'm currently dealing with a severe dental phobia, anxiety, panic attacks, nightmares and flashbacks from past dental traumas. The problems first started at age 9 and have gotten worse until I couldn't cope anymore. I'm just now starting to try to get a handle on things with an online therapist and a dentist who works with anxious patients.

I'm just looking for support and to connect with others in similar situations.

I look forward to meeting you all.

Thank you.

JJ

I am a calm patient, who does get a little anxious before dental appointments, but when I am in the chair and have taken my Clonazepam which is an anti-anxiety medicine, I am OK. My Dr. prescribes the medicine just for Dentist appointments, and then also as a sleep aide before bed. As a side benefit, it also handled my Restless Legs Syndrome, so that is pretty good for one medicine, don't you think? I take a half of a mg. before my dental appointments and a whole one before bed. It helps. I hope your Dr. and Dentist can help you to deal with this. PTSD is something that we have to learn to work around in life as best we can (and yes, this is difficult and usually is best done with the help of a therapist!).

Welcome to the Forum and I hope you find the help you need here. There are friends to be made and things to be healed. Take your time and enjoy the ride.

Firstly a very warm welcome to the forum @Jewel Jones. I send a virtual  from the UK if you accept it.

If I can ever be of any help please just message me and I will gladly help in anyway I can.

Hi.

Thank you both for your support and warm welcome.

@Link Removed - I currently use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) during my dental appointments and it helps a lot. At least I can get the work done and not be anxious during. The nitrous is helping me with the form of exposure therapy that I'm currently undergoing. My dentist and I have been working together for around two months or so, maybe a bit longer. I've seen him about 7 times in that period for an exam, cleaning, 5 crowns, 2 root canal treatments (one of which I had to see a specialist for) and a couple of emergency appointments. The appointments have all been 2 hours long each time.

@Mr Laurie - Thank you for the welcome and yes I accept your hug. That's very sweet. Thank you for the offer of messaging. I'll take you up on that at some point.

Thank you.

JJ

One visit to the Dentist, I have eleven cavities! I am poor, so it took me about 2 years to get them all handled, one at a time, one a month. It was a rough time in my life. Now I have a bunch of hospital bills to pay off, so I hope I don't get any more cavities. My MD told me I have to drink Gatorade, but I have been drinking ZERO when I can get it, so I don't get any sugar. Since I stopped eating suggarry stuff, I have not had any cavities. So I suggest you stay away from sugar.
