New Here
Hi everyone!

I just joined this site after finally deciding to join a forum.

I am 21 years old and I've only recently been diagnosed with PTSD after struggling with it for years.

Three years ago I went to the UK to visit my friend for three weeks. Let's just say from the day I arrived it was a holiday I would never forget.

I was to take a connecting flight from Paris to London but I ended up spending the night at the airport, being my first overseas trip alone, I had no idea what to do and found myself in a panic for hours until I pushed through and got another flight.

I was finally enjoying my holiday until New Years, where I received a call that my grandfather had died, I tried to be ok but it hit me after a few drinks.

When I thought the worst was over, it wasn't. A few days after New Years on my way to the bus station, my friend and I hit a patch of black ice and the car hit the edge of this hill a few times before rolling over. If we were going any faster, we'd be dead.
I got back home a week later and I thought I was fine, I thought I was fine weeks and months after that, I ignored the panic attacks, the nervousness, the blame I put on myself.

I can't talk to my friends and family about it, they know but don't understand what it's like. For three years I've been fighting it alone, it's hard to cope, does anyone know a way to make it easier? A better way to cope with PTSD?

Welcome!!

I would like to suggest two books that helped me very much both by Peter Levine: Waking the Tiger and In An Unspoken Voice. In the second book, he begins with his moment by moment experience of surviving a car accident. You might find that illuminating. He is a doctor that is considered an expert on Somatic Release of trauma energy.

As you will see there are a ton of great articles on this site about PTSD.

So glad you are here. I hope you will find the support and healing I have found here. See you soon!

To Diana - I recall my cousin having a very difficult time after she was in a car accident in California. She saw a therapist and also did EMDR along with it. She is now doing well. I agree with franciemarnie re: the recommended books: Peter Levine is a leader in the field. I believe he has some lectures on YOU TUBE as well. Best wishes.

Hi Diana,

Welcome to MyPTSD forum! :)

To cope with PTSD and learn to manage the symptoms, take the time to learn as much as you can. Therapy will also help you recover, and support will help make the road to recovery much smoother. I hope you find the information and support here beneficial to your healing.

Take care.

Debbie

Hey Jill
A few of my friends have told me to take advanced driving courses, I always tell them no because I know it will remind me too much of what happened. I think for now books and treatment are all I'm going to try, thank you!

And @intothelight

Hi Debbie
Thank you for the welcome and advice, so far I feel more at ease after joining this site, because I know I'm among others that understand.
