If you are unfortunate enough to have experienced the crushing pointlessness of depression, then you have most likely wondered how it can be overcome, or indeed if it even can be beaten. Depression is an insidious monster, constantly hovering over you, making life as miserable as possible.

According to the U.S National Library of Medicine, depression is characterized by feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, an inability to concentrate, changes in appetite, and withdrawal from pleasurable activities. Many sink so deeply into their depression that it seems utterly inescapable; the truth however, is that there are multiple ways of escaping from the icy grip of this highly unpleasant disorder.

The first line of defense is to change your eating habits. Carefully consider everything you put into your body on a daily basis. Do you eat more junk food than you should? Do you consume an inordinate quantity of sugar? How much water do you drink? Sincerely question your diet, and make changes, replacing those unhealthy items with healing fruits and vegetables.

Instead of drinking a sugar laden soda, drink a cold glass of refreshing water instead. Life on Earth did not evolve in oceans full of Pepsi; as such, soda is merely damaging to your system, whereas water continues to serve a critical function in bodily processes. Essentially all physicians agree on this point. A healthy body is conducive to a healthy mind.

An article in Time magazine recently reported that exercise as a treatment for depression is becoming increasingly accepted by the scientific community. Many researchers are beginning to provide evidence that exercise might alter the chemistry of the brain in such a way so as to diminish depression significantly. Yet another reason to stay fit! So in the time that you normally lounge around and watch television, go out for a walk and some fresh air. Buy some exercise equipment and have a specific workout time. You might be surprised at the results.

In Dead Link Removed, philosopher Bertrand Russell attributes much of human suffering to a disinterest in the Earth, and he brings up a greatly important point. Humans have a hard wired inclination to delight in the world, and such activities as television and internet surfing do nothing to satisfy this need. Therefore, it would be advisable to turn off the mindless television shows and take up some other hobby that is nourishing to the soul. Go outside and enjoy nature, read a book, or go on a mini vacation. Study a foreign language, write something, or take up arts; the possibilities are infinite!

If these lifestyle changes fail to lift your depression in any significant way, then it’s time to consult a medical professional, preferably a psychiatrist. Many people tend to clam up at any mention of seeking out medical assistance for a mental disorder; however, it is important to remember that depression is a legitimate medical issue, which can be treated with medication.

There is nothing peculiar about going to a psychiatrist. Your health depends upon getting better. Do not be discouraged if your first medication does not work. Various medications work differently for each individual person, so it might take several tries before you find the right one.

Generally, a psychiatrist or family doctor will refer you to a therapist. Do not ignore this important step in the healing process, as it can be profoundly helpful. Your therapist will assess your issues, before using carefully constructed psychological techniques to help you work through your problems. As with medication, sometimes you have to shop around in order to find the therapist that is right for you. For many people, therapy is an experience that enables them to shut down the negative thought processes that cause depression, thereby giving them a deeper perspective on their lives.

It may take time to recover, and nobody is guaranteeing that it’s going to be easy. However, with the right attitude and motivation, you will eventually recover and continue to lead a productive lifestyle. The bottom line is that you can defeat depression. Using the techniques discussed, you have it within your power to slay this horrible monster.
