My mom was a math wizard, she was a pioneer in the computer field. In fact, colleges did not teach about computers back then in the early 1950s, so General Electric gave her on the job training. She had a Masters Degree in Mathematics and English, both, so they snapped her right up and hired her, as they needed someone who was proficient in both languages and math. (She had studied French too). She worked for them for over 30 years, retiring when she was in her mid 60s, when they offered her a great retirement package. She loved her work. In fact, she was well known in her field and was often written about in trade magazines and such.

@SheilaKathy Programmers of that time are simply amazing, because of how little globalization there was, they had so much work and they were the inventors of many things, they made things without having Internet to search for solutions, they had it all in their heads, it's amazing :amazed:.

She lit cities; that was her job. I remember one day she came home from work and said that they had "lit" Calcutta. I had no idea what or where Calcutta was, I was so young then. Later when I understood what it was, I was impressed.

She used to bring home the key punch cards for us to play with and HUGE printouts from the computers of goofy things, like a HAPPY NEW YEARS! that was 6 feet long or longer. She told us that the key punch cards were the ones that had been incorrect and would have been thrown out. We played with them. (My sister and I).
