@Knak I identify with you on many levels. Writing it out and sharing here will help you find resources to help ease your suffering. For practical advice on how to lessen your reactivity, I recommend a good trauma therapist and from personal experience, Reiki and I also work with a Shaman. It takes a lot of time to retrain the brain that has on its own developed coping mechanism to protect you from suffering when you were young. But those ways of coping don't work in the adult world of having to interact with many different walks of people. I like to watch you tube videos by Tara Brach. She explains the neuropsychology of the brain and then teaches practices that you can use to cope with fear, anger, disappointment, etc. check her out! Her website has guided meditations that help too.

How you change it? Slowly, with hard work. Cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavioral therapy would help.
Until you can find a good therapist, and along with therapy, I'd suggest getting a cognitive-behavioral therapy workbook and working through that.

I just want to say I found answers that fit in another thread regarding cutting with a resource that explain symptoms I couldn't understand.

If interested it is "I'm Trying To Discover Why I Cut..." from Oct. 2011 and there is a pdf. attached called selfharm by Janina Fisher and it is excellent.
