@anthony - yes, new trauma (major and ongoing earthquakes for almost 2 years) triggered it up. I had dealt with the trauma -and the PTSD resolved fully - HOWEVER - the new trauma triggered up new memories. Some were new additions to what I had previously remembered (years ago via flashbacks I had remembered a terrifying incident with a a babysitter looking after my sister and I for 2 nights - following the earthquakes years later, I remembered some new details to do with that incident - ie, he did molest me). And the latest series of flashbacks (the same ones for the past 14 months) are not another incident I had not known about until I started having the flashbacks.
Hope that makes sense.
I am doing new things this time compared to last time. This time I have found a T with a different approach and whom I am able to trust more fully. I'm on a hoard of different meds. My life itself is so vastly differnt it is like I'm a different person. All those years ago, I was in my late teens / early twenties; was WRONGLY diagnosed as having BPD - so wasn't allowed medication for years :mad::mad:; I'd never had any period of 'stability'; I lived in a halfway house for psych patients with 24 hour staff and support; I received zero help for my eating disorder; I wasn't expected to be able to achieve anything or make a recovery at all.
All these years later - I have a professional career, own my own home, have had some treatment for eating disorder (hospitalised twice for anorexia and re-feeding); and can afford private therapy (but not afford private inpatient which would be the best thing but absolutely cannot afford it - tens of thousands of $$$). In a lot of ways I have more, but the symptoms are much much worse. My PTSD is a lot worse this time and as I get closer to knowing what the trauma is, I feel more and more desperate and symptoms a lot worse. That's why I feel more hopeless - because it's been a never-ending struggle since the fatal quake in February 2011 - I
start to make a gain and then WHAM - more flashbacks, and a worsening of symptoms. It's like 1 step forward, 2 backwards. I thought things were bad a year ago - huh - a lot worse now.
@greenleaf - I don't feel I can make a conscious decision to 'face the trauma head on' - trust me
I've tried. I have gone through periods (when the symptoms are a bit more manageable and I've felt supported enough to give it a good go) -
I've willed myself to remember and feel and real with what I do know of the trauma.
It doesn't work. At the moment, I'm in the midst of a lot of flashbacks, and I cannot seem to will myself to 'stay with them' In order to REMEMBER the traumatic incident so I can deal with it. It is honestly beyond my control!!!!! Oh god I wish I could control it - have the flashbacks when it was safe too - ie with my T in our sessions - or when I wasn't working or when I felt strong enough to cope with whatever is revealed - but my mind won't allow me too. I do think that this might be because the trauma incident when it happened, left me feeling very very suicidal and it's my mind keeping me from acting out on it if I were to be in the flashback for long enough - I do think there would be a huge risk of me taking my life if I was IN a flashback for long enough to do so. It feels so very very real it is like I really am back there. And the effects of the flashback after it are bad enough to leave me suicidal also - to avoid the flashbacks coming back!!!
FARKED if I know what to do.
But it has helped a bit to be able to post how I am feeling because I don't have anyone in real life I can talk to about this, other than my T whom I can only speak to once a week.
And I think we all know that one week inside a PTSD mind is a FARK of a long long time.
One thing I have managed to do this week is draw my experience. A bit of art therapy. I've been able to put onto paper my experience of PTSD and my life at the moment. I know that a huge factor in keeping me stuck is my utter fear of more flashbacks and not being able to keep myself safe during them if they were to last longer than they do. And because
so many things trigger the flashbacks, I'm like a prisoner in that the only way to keep the flashbacks at a minimum is if I stay in bed / at home, online or watching pre recorded tv program's. Doing housework, having a shower, leaving the house, seeing the sun shine, all trigger flashbacks. Yesterday seeing a pair of pastel coloured socks triggered them. Driving in the car triggers them. Even my dogs trigger flashbacks and I didn't even have a dam dog growing up!!!
Something's I can vaguely relate to growing up - driving my car might be linked to my mother shutting me in the car boot and driving with me shut in there terrified I would die from running out of oxygen. But even then, the flashbacks a car triggers are not to do with being in the car as a child - or at least I don think it is - I don't know as I don't remember or know WHAT traumatic incident behind these particular set of flashbacks was.
Can anyone answer me this:
HOW can I process the trauma and stop the flashbacks if I can't even remember what the trauma was? 14 months of the same flashbacks from the same day, from a hundred different viewpoints and all I know is how I felt at the time AFTER whatever happened. I shut myself in my bedroom cupboard and I want to die. I leave the cupboard and I want to die. I see no escape and my life will always be like that. I have no one and no one is coming to rescue me or put a stop to the abuse. I am completely unable to cope mentally or emotionally and see death is the only way to stop the pain and fear. I am 9 or 10 years old and my utter ability to 'cope' leaves me wanting to die. And that is another huge part of the problem -
I've felt the complete emotional and mental overwhelm and been completely, absolutely alone with no one and no escape. I am TERRIFIED of being in that place again - hence my inability to cope with the flashbacks.
