I'd say I'm an intermediate artist. I've taken a few art classes, including ones that go over color theory, but never anything with painting, either physical or digital. I have had a fair amount of drawing experience, though. So I had an idea of what I was doing, but was still figuring it out as I went.
Also, I was using a photograph of an already painted miniature as a reference. This meant that two challenging tasks were already done for me: it had already been squished from a 3d object into a 2d object by the camera, and the artist had already chosen coloration that I could just copy; I didn't have to figure out how to represent real world colors using whatever pallate I had chosen. Both of those are non-trivial challenges that I was able to bypass. I really need to try painting something from life.
