I Want To Nominate Anthony For Ted

Not open for further replies.
@Simply Simon, I've got a few that really are tiny, but would possibly do well to strengthen the whole. Take what's useful.
of hundreds if not thousands
I think it'd be better either with 'thousands' alone, or 'thousands - in fact, millions - '. The hundreds is misleadingly small (though good rhetoric).
founding, administrating, and otherwise maintaining the world's greatest PTSD forum
Maybe founding, administering, and developing the ever-expanding vision for the world's greatest, etc.? That's not right either - but otherwise maintaining sounds a bit static, and Anthony really is constantly attuned to growth and development for the site.
Anthony has demonstrated global reach,
Here's one where I think 'clearly demonstrated' would be....clearer. :p
inspiring--albeit seemingly far-fetched--idea
maybe 'inspired and inspiring idea'? The seemingly far-fetched reads a little nutty professor, as opposed to driving force (to me)
almost entirely on member donations and his own personal investment
Is 'almost' correct? If it's honest to say 'relies entirely on member donations and his own personal investment' it's stronger and eliminates a question that doesn't need asking. Also makes it all much more entrepeneurial. I hate that word and can never spell it.
a week to cover our yearly server cost.
Might need to provide emphasis for 'yearly', since we are offsetting it against 'monthly' - you know style rules way better than me - right now, the point isn't landing hard in the sentence.
of--essentially--disabled
Not sure you need 'essentially', qualifier weakens it.
to get out of bed or check their mail every day.
I wanted one of these to be stronger, referencing the struggles for adequate mental health care, maybe, or...something. health care was what came to mind, every person from every country struggles with that.
lessen the burden and stress on our fellow sufferer, Anthony Parsons, and his wife.
Reads a little too much like it was a kindness, as opposed to a seriously motivated intention to get the site onto stable financial ground so that Anthony could put his energy where it would be far better spent - continuing to grow the vision for the site. Anyway, that's what it felt like at the time.
Perhaps if Anthony could share his idea through TED, the growing stigma toward suffers of PTSD, to veterans and survivors of rape and other violence, might diminish, even a little, even if only for eighteen glorious minutes.
i wanted the 'perhaps' to go away, I think it's too soft - and I'm not sure about 'growing stigma', it's more like omnipresent stigma - except not that word. But PTSD has been stigmatized, historically, since before it had a name.
Anthony Parsons is a veteran
Maybe ex-serviceman? I like the idea of referencing Nicolette's point, here:
Anthony was only 33 when he was first sent on leave being unable to work and diagnosed around 34-35 years of age.
It's good bio background.
@Eleanor way to kick major expository ass.
This made me spit take my coffee into the computer. it was the juxtaposition of 'expository' and 'ass'. :D

Like I said, a whole bunch of tiny, take or leave. :coffee:

Hahahahaha WRONG Ted!

I was thinking bear....Yeah, I'd go with that one, not this one.

@joeylittle and anyone else who will help with another round of editing, please advise.

I'd really like to integrate pieces of what Eleanor wrote, but I'm not really sure how. As the OP I'm having trouble penetrating my own structure and thinking outside of its already-developed skeleton in order to insert new stuff.

Please everyone do not shy from giving feedback. I really would like this nomination to be as hard-hitting as possible. I really, really believe that Anthony belongs on the TED stage.

Edit Round 2

Tell us briefly about the speaker. What’s their occupation? Any honors or distinctions? Their recent work? Why are you recommending them?

Anthony Parsons is an Australian ex-serviceman who developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of his military experience.

I am nominating Anthony because he inspired me. He inspired me to save my own life, and he inspired the same in thousands of others through his work founding, administrating, and perpetually developing the world's most successful PTSD forum, a resource created and run by those personally touched by PTSD for those living with or affected by PTSD: MyPTSD.com.

MyPTSD offers direct support, research, testimonials, and myriad other resources to those affected by PTSD. It is my understanding that when Anthony went to psychology conferences and spoke to professionals about his dream to create an online space for those with (or otherwise affected by) PTSD, he was dismissed at every turn. This dismissal was largely because a basic feature of PTSD is extreme avoidance of the issues experienced by sufferers.

Regardless, in 2005 Anthony created the first incarnation of the MyPTSD forum, which has since thrived magnificently into a website that sees over one million unique visitors annually. All staff--myself included, a now 4+-year member of the forum--are volunteers, and they put in countless hours to moderate this invaluable and irreplaceable resource of peers struggling to overcome the many pitfalls of this permanent disorder.

I have been a fan of TED for nearly as long as the forum has been saving my life in my struggle with PTSD, and I have always thought that Anthony Parsons belonged on its stage. Anthony has irrefutably demonstrated global reach, maintaining a strongly connected membership from every continent. He has proven that an inspiring idea coupled with streamlined design and fortified with perserverance can change the tide for that innumerable sea of those suffering through PTSD. The support and resources garnered through participating on the forum--in itself a type of exposure therapy--has served to arm sufferers and supporters alike with the education and community necessary to foster healing. I have no doubt it has saved lives, families, relationships, and otherwise irrevocably and beautifully altered those it has touched over the past ten years.

Anthony relies on member donations and his own personal investment to fund server costs and improvements for the forum. Many of us living with PTSD are unemployed, on disability, or otherwise make a meager income with which to support ourselves. We are not a wealthy bunch. In spite of this, donations roll in month after month, sometimes anonymous donations from those who have visited and benefited from reading our on-going and ever-growing collaborative conversation about living with and managing PTSD.

To illustrate how much this community cares about Anthony and the forum's sustainability, I will share a brief anecdote. This year, Anthony's wife and co-administrator, Nicolette, put out a call for donations. We were in danger of falling short on our $240 monthly server costs following AdSense's decision to terminate partnership with our site given the "sensitive" nature of the site's content (rape, kidnapping, childhood abuse, war, etc.). In response, members rallied a donation drive, in which we raised $3,000 among ourselves in less than a week to cover our yearly server cost. This act was nothing short of miraculous for a community composed majorly of disabled people, spattered across the globe, many of whom struggle to get out of bed or check their mail every day. Regardless, as a community we put our dollars where our hearts were in order to lessen the fiscal stress on Anthony and Nicolette of keeping our community afloat.

I know as an avid follower of TED that it is a global speak pipe for technology, entertainment, and design--all of which are marvelously encompassed in Anthony's execution of his dream to connect and educate those living with PTSD. It is a platform designed to encourage and spread great ideas that inspire and change the world. MyPTSD accomplishes the same, providing some respite from the gravity of this disorder among peers who understand. Anthony tirelessly continues to improve upon the realization of his dream, his great idea: a forum to connect those who are fundamentally detached and isolated the world over. TED is a free educational resource, which touts the brilliant and the idealistic without apology. MyPTSD is not so different, offering its resources completely free of charge and asking only that members who can donate do so every now and again to keep our community running. If Anthony could share his idea through TED, the insidious and pervasive stigma toward suffers of PTSD, to veterans and survivors of rape and other violence, might diminish, even a little, even if only for eighteen glorious minutes.

I had a read over and just wanted to say a couple of things to help with your editing...:)

and myriad other resources to those
think your missing a couple of words! and a myriad of other resources to those

miraculous for a community of disabled people flung across the globe
i'm not sure you can say a community of disabled people as some/many are not disabled.

to lessen the fiscal stress
financial?

Hope thats ok. :)

@Recovery4Me I used veteran in the first two drafts, but I got the impression people seemed to think ex-serviceman was more appropriate because Anthony is still young. *shrug*

@anthony, do you have a preference for this?

ETA I was super curious because of usage so I looked it up, @rainbow1, and it turns out "myriad" can be both a noun and an adjective. Text doesn't convey it, but I'm not being catty; I just thought it was interesting and that you may want to know.

ETA (again)
I changed the sentence about the community as disabled. Is it too long/wordy?

I see no issue with the word ex-

America already does it different to us, in that the US refers to all ex service as veterans, whereas here a veteran is someone who served overseas on operations, everyone else is ex-servicemen -- whilst ex- also befits everyone collectively, veteran or otherwise.

Zero issue how you say it.
