It's taken me over an hour online and two full reboots to type one comment and one very short pm.

Why is it that whenever I want to use the tablet that I bought, Mr Google decides for me that it's more important to update shite that I never use, don't want, and can't delete?

And why had Google keyboard collected over 80 mb of "data" on me? But it still "corrects" what I want to write, into what it decides I might have wanted to write?

Are other tablet and phone operating systems even half as bad?

I know nothing about Google on tablets, but I hate how much of their stuff is built into my phone. I don't want their browser, or their 'store', or them collecting data either. (I have everything turned off I can figure out how to turn off.) It's MY phone, I should be able to control what's on it!

I don't care for google either, although I do have a gmail account. Nothing is private anymore on the web. Nothing!!!! I have a cheap Fire tablet that I use occasionally, but would lose my mind if I had to use it daily. It's a piece of crap. The only reason I even bought it was to read books, but recently I bought a used paper white kindle for $50 which I love!!

Have you considered getting a better tablet????

Have you considered getting a better tablet????

The tablet itself is good, but try to do anything on the net, and it has got to the stage that the tablet is almost unusable. It's taken me about 20 minutes to type this reply to here.

There are four separate Google services running in the background at the moment including gurgle play, and gurgle play store, theres no way to stop them, and they're freezing everything else up.

I checked my battery usage yesterday, and about half the power consumption was a by gurgle service that I hadn't started, and it didn't say that it had started itself (and I hadn't even got WiFi turned on, so it can't have been updating shite) and I couldn't close it down.

It's getting to the point where windows used to go, that the machine is just about unusable.

I have a lot of books and audio on here, and I use the tablet a lot, but I think it's getting to the point where I need to get my stuff off the tablet and look into changing the operating system to something like an open source android or a tablet version of a Linux (apparently Android is built on top of a Linux kernel )

My laptop (now in its teens) has been on a Linux since Microsoft stopped supporting xp. The Linux actually ask if it's ok to look for updates and I can also tell it to update when I want it to. There's also software for everything available for free...

I need to know that the touch screen, WiFi etc will be supported .

[/Rant]

I am typing this on a Galaxy s6 edge.
I hate this thing...
I hate. Having an update notice to tell me, that my phone will be updating. Whether or not I f*cking want it too. Then proceeds to shut the phone off, to turn back on so it can inform me that I don't currently have enough storage space for the update.
It did this every three days, until I finally found the hidden little button, buried in a menu somewhere, that finally let me shut off the auto forced update "feature".

I hate. Having the volume on my audiobook drop to inaudible, by itself.... So I can say that I understand that loud noise is bad for me. Because I'm too stupid to know that ahead of time....
TWICE A WEEK! Because apparently I have f*cking Alzheimer's and can't remember to put my undies on correctly. So I need yet another nanny to tell me what's best for me... f*ck off Samsung!

Puts a whole new spin on Dr. Google, doesn't it?

I hate the bloatware, the constant crashing browser, the random battery drain from mystery Google service that wasn't there yesterday. I hate paying out the ass for data because new Google service that decided to burn a gigabyte of it last month, "so it could sync with something more efficiently....".
Thanks Google for the $45, free convenient service. f*cking thankful for that.... yup....

Ass-hole!

Totally feel you @Anarchy. The modern world seems to be amazing and convenient. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't so f*cking annoying.

But it is.

Pity, Apple's not much better...

@Anarchy

Were you under the impression that the tablet and its OS were created for your benefit?? ;) (kind teasing)

All tablets and their OSs exist exclusively to collect data about you.....it is their raison d'être!

.....and just think! you(and all of the rest of us) PAID these companies for the privilege!

They got to sell you the tablet, the OS, the apps,......AND they get to sell the data from everything you have ever typed on said tablet.

Where you travel, what you search, what you read, who you talk to.... and on and on.

Happy times!

That's about the level of it!

Between keyboard taking about five minutes to load, everything freezing up as another update was downloaded and chrome rebooting to update...

It's taken me about 30 minutes to type this reply!

The tablet is a lenovo, despite having the fake brand name of a German discount supermarket on the front, so, yeah, Lenovo had a big scandal a year or so back for shipping machines with spyware ready loaded for targeting advertising.

I think it's rapidly getting to the time when I need to speak with a friend's computer nerd, teenage son, about options for putting something like Linux onto a tablet.

I've stopped using Android now. Woke up one day and my HTC decided it didn't like being on anymore. Partner had to actually boot into the system and get it to open like that.
I have rapidly switched to an iPhone now as my partner's iPhones and Mac runs beautifully and the OS is so much better optimized. But if you're not into Apple at all (and I wasn't into it until I got my iPhone and even now I have a few problems here and there with it) then Linux is your friend.

Its taken about five minutes to load the keyboard, and it's really slow.

There are three separate Google services apps that have started themselves, along with Google play store and the YouTube app.

I've had a look at some forum posts on rooting ARM architecture tablets and phones that are running Android.

They're not clearly distinguishing between phones and tablets, but the implication seems to be that phones often have proprietary bits that won't necessarily be supported by open source operating systems, and the same might be true for some tablets.

Hmm, a usb WiFi modem for a Raspberry pi is £7.50 :geek:

Grrrr
Almost five minutes for the keyboard to load again, and it's really slow.

The largest single user of battery power is Google services. They're using around 48% of battery power,

The display, screen keyboard Android system, WiFi and chrome browser all together use the other 52%

Ive had a good to at changing defaults and stopping those services (they're things like play store, user stats, location services, keyboard stats...) And it's just a game of whack a mole. They can't be kept off.

It wasn't this bad in the past, but this has gone beyond the point of taking the p!ss.

I've worked out how to find usb memory sticks and sd cards on the system ( /mnt/usb_storage), apparently "mnt" stands for "mount", it's basically the Linux file system, only I don't have access to the root.

I had a play with a couple of emulators for the Linux BASH shell this afternoon. They seem to work well for using command line scripts for copying multiple files, and hey allow wildcard characters, so I can select all of a file type in a folder, for example. *.pdf

It looks like I should be able to back up all of my books, documents, audio files etc. I've hardly even used the camera, and usb wireless dongles are available. The only thing I'd miss, if it's proprietary and not supported by a Linux distribution, is the sound.

If I'm away from the forum for a few days, it means that this tablet is getting rooted, and having Linux put onto it
