"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man." Winston Churchill

Today I had to make a very heartbreaking decision to put my beloved Arab mare down. She has been with me for 12 years and we have done it all together. We have done endurance rides, trail rides, and camping. She has carried people to safety when they were in medical need. She has done High School Equestrian events with my daughter. She has taught young and old to ride. She has been my comfort and the one I go to when I am hurting and need to be understood. She sensed my moods and responded with love or gentleness or energy. She would hug me with her head. She was the best therapy I could ask for. Now she is gone. I am heartbroken.

"The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears." Arabian Proverbs

Kaimana I will miss you. I'm sorry I had to make this decision and you had no say except through the pain you were in. The pain for you is gone, not for me my friend. Rest in peace.

That's a terrible, terrible loss PH.There's simply no other way to say it. Gosh I'm so sorry. When you have one of THOSE beasties- I know. Your photo laden eulogy here was testimony for her, and such a poignant one I thank you. All our animals leaving leave holes, I don't know what it is when one loses That particular horse but it's got it's own place in mangling the heart.

I heard another idiot the other day pontificating all about how animals have no souls, that heaven is reserved for this 'higher life form' of humans. Oh-ok.Almost slugged them, which pretty much disproved their point, wouldn't you say? I'd have to say God made heaven for them first, then decided some of us could maybe share it if we were nice enough once in awhile. Your lovely big girl is still with you and I'm not just saying that. I hope it can give you some comfort, after this first awful pain subsides.

Much hugs, xo, and hope there's some peace in your life today despite how much this hurts,

Anni

I lost one of my cats a few weeks ago, and like Anni's post above, I too have to believe that these wonderful animals go to heaven.

Try to focus on the good memories you have of Kaimana. Focus on the fact that she had a great life with people like you who loved her! Let yourself grieve, but please believe she is in a great place, free of pain.

My thoughts and prayers are with you tonight,
Robin

(((PH))) I'm so sorry for your loss, it's almost a family member that is gone and if God created all creatures, then there is a heaven to bring home all those souls that belongs to him ... be it humans, animals or vegetation ... there is so much destruction, so wouldn't it be logical that he calls back these divine belongings to paradis ?

If I were suffering, I would not want any relentless and futile medical efforts which would only prolong the suffering ... that is not life ... you did a very kind thing to Kaimana and I thank you for it.

The pain and emptiness of the loss, I know, can be overwhelming. My love for horses is immense. They are such noble and intelligent creatures with a soul much larger than many, many humans I know. I'm sorry for your loss.

Just in case you aren't familiar with "Rainbow Bridge", I'de like to relay it on this thread...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies after having been especially close to someone here on earth, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills where all the animals run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine. Our friends are warm and comfortable.

Those who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days gone by.

The animals are happy, except for one thing: They each miss someone very special, someone left behind.

The day comes when one of the animals stops and looks into the distance. She runs from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. You have been spotted!

When you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion. Happy kisses rain upon your face. Your hands caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of you pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...
May you find comfort until it is your turn to cross Rainbow Bridge

PH - knowing when to let go is one of the hardest things in life and shows an unfathomable amount of strength. Love like you and Kaimana had isn't one sided, and I know that she knew that in letting her go, you were taking care of her just as you always did. I don't know what you believe, but I believe she will still be there to support you - in the wind, in the leaves, in little swirls of dust....
