Just Diagnosed - A Total Shock

New Here
I have just been diagnosed with PTSD, a total shock to me, but relieved that there was a reason behind my distress and demons. I have flashbacks and nightmares about an incident that happened nearly 20 yrs ago, which has now taken over my life. I have had 2 visits for EMDR treatment and if I am honest it's not for me.I could not take on board the therapy, I am now going to try a new treatment where they take my mind back to the incident and try and talk about it, which I am very nervous about doing as it is something I don't want to re-live. Has anyone else tried EMDR, and been successful, or, I am open to any suggestions of treatment that may have worked for someone else.

Thanks in advance.

Hey France welcome to the forum...
I cant answer your question on EMDR i am waiting to start myself.

There is a lot of information on topics within the treatment of PTSD, ranging in the begining section here if you go through Breaking the Ice above...there is all sorts of documentation. Coping and what can be expected to some degree.
We have all been through very different things and are all on the same path to wellbeing. This is a very supportive site...and maybe some of the questions you have may have been answered ...I use the search thread when I am looking for something particular. We are all so different and what works for one may not necessarily work for another. It is difficult to re visit the trauma....but from what I have read it is the re evaluation and subsequent coping strategies that aid towards some form of recovery. I hope you are able to have some of your questions answered....put them out there and we will help if we can.

Wishing you well and welcome

Welcome to the forum France.

I believe you'll find this a very supportive and helpful place to be.

I can't answer any questions about EMDR either, as I haven't tried it, but I do hope you find something that works for you.

Take care.

You know when I first heard the diagnosis PTSD was about 4-5 years ago. I had heard so many things I was called, but when my therapist mentioned, PTSD to me (not the other diagnosis' weren't there), a lot of those mixed diagnoses stemmed from my PTSD, even my OCD my obsessively doing things stemmed from my OCD in one case because if I didn't do something right or if I did something wrong, or someone thought I did something I'd be abused in most cases, and so I began to get obsessive with some things.

So it was very new to me to learn that PTSD was a cause for a lot of these depressions, etc. as well.
