Wow your story is similar to mine. I met my sufferer when I was 19, we started dating when I was 20. On again off again for a few years. Lost touch when he moved away with his family, but reconnected 7 years ago. We are in out 50s. Danced around our feelings for a while, we were both in other relationships.
