New Here
My husband was diagnosed with PTSD in 03. He is currently on his 3rd tour in Iraq. We have known each other since we were 11, (21 years). We have been married since 05, everyone says our relationship is like a fairy tale.
To be married to your childhood best friend, what a treat.
Well, on June 11th, he sent me an email and said he'd realized he'd been living a lie and he now thinks our relationship was a high school crush gone too long, and that as soon as he comes home, he's filing for divorce. This was so out of character and out of the blue. I talked to his old 1SG, who is a good friend of ours, now a Sergeant Major and he read the email. SGM told me if I didn't go to the Rear Detachment and tell them he was having a ptsd episode he would because this was so out of nowhere and unlike him. My husband was very proud of himself for convincing them he's fine.
Anyways, long story short, I've been trying to convince him this is a classic ptsd episode and the chaplain gave me a bunch of info to forward to him. While he was home on leave in January, he woke me up on two separate nights and said "They're looking at me" with tears rolling down his face and then went back to sleep. I kept it to myself because it scared me but I finally told him last week. He said he understands now why I think it's ptsd but that he's fine and thinking more clearly than he ever has before.
He says now that he never loved me and used me to get custody of his kids and that it "would be best for all parties involved if you went home to Arizona."
Fooling someone for a year is one thing, even 4 is plausible. But this guy has been my best friend for 21 years and I and everyone in the families think there is something seriously wrong with him.
The chaplain thinks he has emotionally numbed himself and is isolating himself. The strangest thing is he kept getting online to IM with me up until 2 days ago. The chaplain thinks he may be using me to stay grounded.
I just want to know if this is common behavior with ptsd. I have ptsd stemming from abuse as a child. I know I push people away alot...but not like this. And every time I talk to him, his lies get more grandiose and he acts like he's superman. He says things like "I can have any girl I want". And he keeps telling me he doesn't want to hurt me but I keep pushing for counseling and not agreeing to the divorce so I've left him no choice but to keep hurting me. I love him with all of my heart and soul and I hate to see him like this.
I've even told him, the real T is a beautiful, kind, caring, responsible man and would never do any of this, especially to his children and that's why I feel in my heart that this is a ptsd thing. Or something.
Anyways, sorry for the long post. Thank you.
