recognizing that all I have done for the past 50 years, that at the time I thought was so great and cool, didn't matter one iota.

I'd like to challenge that a little. It might SEEM like it did matter, to you, but I'd bet that a lot of things you did DID matter to other people. People like your kids. Even if they don't acknowledge it, maybe don't even realize it. And I'd bet there were plenty of other people you influenced along the way. It may not seem like 'enough' but it was something.

And that has me question what the purpose of doing anything - ever again - is.

There are a lot of ways of looking at purpose. I think, a lot of the time, we think on too big and grand a scale. My personal purpose it to intend to leave the world a better place, in some way, however small, every day. That might mean just saying something to the clerk at the gas station that makes them smile. "Purpose" doesn't have to be all that grand to have value.

I think being lost is having no destination, no desires or thoughts or abilities to imagine a way out, or even to what.
