Man Using Excuse Of Being A Vet To Get What He Wants

So let me start off by explaining that I work part-time at a grocery store as a cashier and supervisor. There is a customer that shops there regularly. He always likes to give the cashiers a hard time.
One day he told me he shouldn't have to pay tax because he is a vet. He then went on to say that I have no idea what he has gone through, what he deals with now, etc. (I actually thought it was a coincidence that he was talking to me about not understanding how hard it is to deal with PTSD).
Anyway, he came through today and saw that a sale was over a couple days ago for something he had wanted to buy. He came through the cash, yelled at the cashier (making the poor girl cry) and demanded to see the store manager. I stepped in to help. He told me that because he's a vet he should be allowed to have this at the sale price! I couldn't believe it!
After all the whining to the store manager he ended up getting it. I couldn't believe it!

Another customer who heard the conversation turned to me and said "If he were really a vet, he wouldn't be playing it up like that. That's extremely disrespectful. And if, in fact, he is a vet, he was probably hardly involved."

Now, I'm not making assumptions here and I'm not trying to offend anyone. I am just wondering what anyone else thinks about this. I think this is more disrespectful to veterans than anything. Its along the same lines as someone abusing welfare. :naughty:

I felt like saying to the man, if things worked that way then I'd get everything the way I want it as well because I've been abused for most of my life and I suffer from C-PTSD!

Obviously the mans behaviour was wrong, the store manager probably just gave him the item at the sale price to get rid of him, the easy option. I guess though he may of been a vet with a huge chip on his shoulder, it takes all kinds.
Similar thing happened to me recently I was waiting in the local doctors waiting rooms to see my physcologist and a supposed returned soldier came in to try and get in to see a doc without an appointment, he was very abusive, (fun and games for me observing it, not) he went on along the lines of " I was a soldier in Afganastan, Iraq, Timor and Vietnam(the guy was in his 50's, so that statement seemed a lot like bullsh!t) I should be able to see a doc whenever I want and it has to be an Australian doctor no foreigners, he treatened suicide and mass murder if he didn't get into see a doctor....why because he run out of Valium and he wanted it yesterday.:naughty:

Both stories sound kinda messed up to me.

I have a lot of respect for our vets and what they have gone through. It is sad to hear when people pretend to be former soldiers. It is also sad to hear when actual former soldiers flip out. Either way it is a serious problem.

In manic's case I would love to see a cashier ask for his military ID. "Oh sir I just want to thank you so much for your service to our country. Of course you should be given special privelages. Just let me show your military ID to my manager and I am sure we can get you whatever you need. Why would I need to see ID? Because we have had some other customers that were horrible enough to pretend to be former soldiers... can you immagine what kind of scum bag would do that???"

In wattle's case I think the guy really did need that valium... like the day before yesterday! I know in the city I grew up in this guy would have been involuntarily hospitalized immediately for threatening suicide... and taken to jail for threatening homoside. Even though the behavior was totally disrespectful, I sincerely hope it was just some hot air from a junkie trying to get more drugs. It would be a tragedy if the person really was serious about what he was saying.

I love all our vets and wish them the best in their return to civilian live. I think it is horrible when people try to fake being vets. I tend to assume that people are being honest in regards to their military service since I would rather be duped then diss a soldier. :Hug_emoticon:

Yeah, kick him out! I don't know what a wanker is, but it sounds like that fool! I wouldn't let anyone bully me in that way. He's not serving his country now by being a wanker (Anthony, you'll have to explain, I'm an uncultured southern girl in the hills of Tennessee. Hoo Hoo!)

I lived with a Vietnam vet for 7 years, my BIL was a Vietnam vet, and I know several others.....NEVER have they used that to get anything. As a matter of fact, they never liked talking about the war, or that they were even in it....

The guy is apparently using it to his advantage, or a liar. Either way, I find it distasteful...... He's a Jerk!!!!!!!

I'm surprised by that man's behaviour too and in my experience with D he's been the opposite. It's too much of a long story but when he applied in 2003 for benefits he was turned down AND not because he got his ptsd from any other source than 25 years of combat but was turned down for falling in between the cracks.

We've just heard from OSSIS (military peer support coordinator) that he can now reapply and this time he probably will get them. That's fantastic news so I thought, well D said this week that he doesn't want to take from another vet whose struggling financially and that everybody thinks these funds are an endless pit of $$ but he knows there not and since he volunteered for service and knew what he was risking he will pay for his own therapy. Well we are paying over $350/week now and I'm quite pissed with his reasonings for not re-applying.

So now I go back to that "vet" in the store regarding him paying taxes and he should have been kicked out of that store!!! From what I can see that is SO unmilitary.

NEVER have they used that to get anything.
Nor I... but there are always exceptions... those who think they are special or hurt more than another. I witnessed it myself in a hospital one night. A guy came in with a cold and we where sitting there with Alexander in our lap, really sick. Kids and the more ill always go first in hospitals here... it is a priority order based on their initial assessment. Well... we are still waiting for the past couple of hours and this guy starts going off at the nurses, how he has PTSD and is suffering so bad, that he should be in first and out so he can get home to relax... blah blah blah.

Moral - There is always going to be those small minority that abuse any illness in order to get something, legitimate or not.

Maybe next time he comes through and insists he gets something his way because his a vet, I'll ask him if he's a vet for small or large animals!

When I first read the thread title I thought you were referring to hamster vets anyhow. We don't really call the guys vets here in the UK, but now my mind is blank and I can't think what we call them. I thought whay would being a man that looks after poorly puppies entitle him to anything? (although I love puppies).

Glad that's all been cleared up , but yeah I'm with Anthony. Whatever the chap has been through, it's not on for him to behave like a wanker at the store.

Veterans pay taxes and pay full price for everything non-veterans do.Don't let that manipulative wanker (what ever that is) get away with anything. If you give in to him once, he will think he can get away with it every time. Set reasonable boundaries.

No matter what he has gone through in life, that does not give him the right to abuse others or get reduced prices for anything, unless ALL veterans get the same benefits.

If he is in his 50's there's a slight chance that he could have been in VietNam --and-- Iraq, but I seriously doubt it; this man seems to be just one of those people who try to get others to give him stuff he doesn't deserve. He's a sponge, a leech, and maybe also a veteran, but someone who probably has a mental illness, but is trying to use his hard life to gain sympathy from others. Don't get manipulated.

2quilt is a 100% service-connected Desert Storm Veteran. Vets of all shades get free Veteran's Day dinners at Golden Corral. Disabled vets rated at 100% get free fishing and hunting licenses, pay no property taxes, get deals for home loans, get help with education and training, free parking on the street, free medical care at the VA (poor quality, but free), VA monetary compensation, military base privileges, free entrance into national parks, and some places like thrift stores and cruiselines give military discounts. Your mileage may vary.

Having read the comments Re wankers? from Suzie Q and 2 quilt, I wonder if America has wankers?:rofl:Sorry couldn't resist.
