I take Valerian tea, I make my own rather than buying the ready made teabags as they're not as strong. It makes me drowsy and the muscle relaxant effects are clear. But I have to point out that it can't be taken with some medications so checking is always good. I also use it in a low dose with passionflower, lemonbalm and chamomile which is quite tasty and very effect at just calming me down on a generally anxious day.

It works in conjunction with other sleep aids. On it's own, not so much anymore. However brand is sooooooo important!. Wal-mart brand won't work like a good quality one from a health food store.

If you take more than you need (will go up over time) you will have the opposite effect you are looking for, so start small. I take 7.5 sublingual on top of ambein. The combination is more effective than each on their own. But there was a time that 2.5 melatonin would work for me.

My doctor had me try alternating melatonin and Valerian root for several weeks. It didn't help and I'm uncomfortable taking hormones anyway.

I voted sometimes. Before my PTSD diagnosis and before I was on SSRI's and anxiety meds, it would knock me out to where I couldn't even hear my alarm. Now that I am on meds, it does not work the same. I also read the label (last night in fact) that it could interact with SSRI's and reduce the effectiveness of them. I won't be taking it anymore. I'll just be a insomniac zombie until I can try a prescribed sleep aid.

Dream Water seems to be the most effective for me, but 3 bucks a night is more than I am willing to spend. Also, as others have mentioned, it seems to be less effective if I don't use them sparingly. I have been using this stuff called Alteril, which contains L-Tryptophan, Melatonin, Valerian, Chamomile, I-Theanine, Lemon Balm, Hops, Passion Flower, among "other sleep inducing/relaxation inducing ingredients". Results seem to fluctuate between none at all and "oh god, it's noon".

I said sometimes because it seems to vary with my body. It does help me fall asleep, but sometimes if I'm already depressed, it can leave me groggy in the morning. I take it in pill form, usually 5mg.

I'm thinking that my body might be starting to get use to the 5mg of melatonin though since I have been taking it daily for a couple months now because all this week I have taken it and still been having random, and different thoughts that keep me away a bit.
