Get it right, Golf One Six Delta, and Out is ok if he has finished the conversation and does not want a reply.

Does that count when I thump some tosser who is bigger than me aswell ? It would go something along the lines of,

me: SMACK "Contact, Wait, Out"
tosser: "Damn it, he said Out, now I can`t hit him back `cos he doesn`t want a reply"
I can see the guy at the bar "F*ck I need to get my drills upto speed"

Could you imagine all the f*cked up looks on civvies faces "I am awfully sorry old chap but, I did say OUT so you are not allowed to hit me back. Rules are Rules after all"

THE INFAMOUS BRUIN TEDDY-BEAR INCIDENT

Jimmy, you are quite correct I have dropped and given you ten (No, no, not like that...)

But, talking about net practice, as we are, here's a little episode that happened one dark night in BAOR.

The scene:
A dark, damp hill-top somewhere in north-west Germany,1982. 0200 hours.
We'd been in noddy-suits etc. for three days 'cos some twat thought it was a good idea.
As a baby tech I was in the Tech Control wagon, we'd also been on radio silence for 36 hours.
Which meant f#ck-all really as our comms radio-relay shots were permanently live anyway.

The Div. VNWB (a sort of net-wide intercomm) box sat silent, just the occasional crackle of static and the faint constant hiss of 'BID swish'.

Then the box went quiet, always a sign that someone's pressel was down.

'Are there any friendly teddy-bears out there? asked a squeaky little voice

Loooong pause........................

'I'm a friendly teddy-bear! came another squeakier voice

Short pause.....

'Me too!' came a distinctly Scottish bear...

Pause..........

'SILENCE ON THIS MEANS!' shouted a rupert (not the bear).

Pause.....

'He's not a very friendly teddy-bear, is he?' said the first bear....

That was it. On all the hill-tops around us convoy switches were set to HST, horns beeped and it was 'over'!

lmao.

There was a recording of a radio conversation in very, rough weather, between a warship and a lighthouse.

Anyway, basically the Captain got on the radio and asked the 'Light' to alter its course, when they refused he stated that he was a warship and that the person had to alter course. It finished with the light house keeper telling him he was a light house.

Does anyone remember that.

I was in Alpha Battery and our battery mascot was a gator, our motto was "GATORS LEAD THE WAY!" lol anyway, so on the radio my call sign was Gator One Six Delta because the Humvee I drove was A16 and my section chiefs call sign was Gator One Six Actual since I was the driver I was Gator One Six Delta. I can see where if you didn't know all that it would look funny. :)

No, it makes sense mate, UK & Commonwealth used to use the same practice at start of WW2 we just got all obscure and furtive 'cos the Germans (and then everyone else we tangled with during the 50's) had damm good EW and int.
In those scenarios you avoided tying your unit ID to your Callsigns. You just couldn't afford to announce who you were....hence a culture of 'net anonymity' grew up. Unless you were really in the know, you couldn't tie physical units on the ground to their talk on the net.
In the modern counter-insurgency scenario it helps to be able to do this though, just like police units have their C/S painted on the roof. Just goes to show how different current confrontations are to the 'conventional' tactical set-ups...
