Hi everyone! New to the forums here. I'm currently navigating through the murky waters of PTSD related assistance. The tricky part is the help available to us as Hospital Security falls short because we fall into a grey area. We are offered general mental health assistance as civilians. We are neither designated as hospital medical staff or First Responder.
I work in a busy 24 hour ER. I am more of a Third Responder but work very closely with Paramedic, Police Services, Fire Department and Hospital Staff during times of crisis.
Our operational workload resembles First Responder with huge exception, we don't often deal with initial scene response or management. Although sometimes we are the first to deal with crisis events at the hospital level.
Patient's medically crash in parking lot and waiting areas. We deal with a lot of violent scenarios, manage ER facility at times of critical trauma to ensure Paramedic, Dr.'s and Nursing Staff can work uninterrupted and safely. In extreme critical cases, my team prepare the hospital for LifeFlight helicopter landing.
It's been a frustrating ride. I've sat in on PTSD management seminars. I relate to Paramedic / Police service emotions more than hospital support staff and the counselling sessions I have are completely inadequate to the emotions I wrestle with.
I'm looking forward to meeting others here!
